Q: What is the spare cover used for?

The Huanuo HNFR2 doesn't actually have a *spare* cover, it has an *alternative* cover, for the upper block only. The default cover has a normal fabric base (ie. slippy) with 4 soft velcro pads for attaching the lower block. The second cover has a non-slip base and no velcro pads, for when you want to use the upper block solo. Once you've decided what height you want, fit the correct case to it.

Q: Does the foot rest have grips on the bottom for laminate flooring etc?

Hi, the underside is completely covered with a fabric made up of tiny dots. If your feet are on the top and you are working on vinyl flooring it does not move. I work on carpet but I tried it in my hallway. It's a good buy !
