Many Ways to Play
So, I just upgraded from my ASUS VG248QE to the VG258QM, the one with the 0.5 hz TN panel. I decided that Hardware Unboxed (I think it was) found that the IPS panel didn't quite handle the Black Frame Insertion (ELMB) which is an improved feature I used on my VG248QE. Now, if you didn't know, earlier 144 hz monitors in 2013 had an optional 120 hz mode that was used primarily for 3d glasses. Remember those? Yeah. So if you hacked it, you could have this thing called "lightboost" which gamers found worked for reducing motion blur. After this hack came out and after Nvidia 3D Vision died, monitors used better versions of this tech, and called it "black frame insertion". That's why I got ELMB.Now, the reason I upgraded from my old monitor is twofold. One, I am mildly autistic with a variety of comorbid disorders, and as such, I am highly sensitive to refresh rates. I can easily tell the difference between 144 hz, 240 hz, and 280 hz. My brain is very different from Allistic (non autistic) people so of course, YMMV.The second reason, was that if you wanted low motion blur, there was a hard M.E.T.A.: Use lightboost, set the boost to 10%, which ruins colors and makes it dim. I got bored. I couldn't be creative in how I set it up. Use normal 144hz, or use lightboost. That's it.The VG258QM fixes this issue for me. There are many ways to use it, and some secret ones that you can only learn about on the blur busters' forums under "the official vg259qm owner's thread", which despite being for a sister monitor, has tweaks that work on this monitor as well. I will now list a few of the ways you can use this board, all of which can be mixed and matched to some degree:1. Use Gsync2. Use ELMB Sync with gsync or just regular ELMB3. Overclock your monitor4, Use 8-bit HDR5. Use the hidden 240-hz exclusive 10-Bit HDR (with FRC dithering, so it's not "real" 10 bit) via a special hack on the blurbusters' forums using Custom Resolution Utility for more convenient hdr in games6. Use the top-secret developer menu (blurbusters forums) to enable a hidden Variable Overdrive (OD) setting with optimized output, but glitches your menu text until you reset it7. Use shadow boost to see in dark corners ingame. Now, there are some caveats. The HDR isn't the best, so use it only as a special treat. It isn't the main draw of this monitor. The colors are great on sRGB (95% on rtings) but the HDR colors are mid (only 45%.) Another thing is, if you wanna use the ELMB, be sure to use it on the TN panel as the VG259QM IPS panel doubles frames and can't fully support 280hz, despite having a similar firmware to the VG258QM. ELMB is also a bit dim, but you get used to it... at least, I did. The monitor also doesn't let you use HDR and ELMB at the same time, and also locks out brightness control (duh, it uses the backlight to do it in the first place) and ASCR. Also, the screen will go blank for a few seconds when activating an hdr game or an autohdr game (windows 11).And as a TN panel, the color accuracy and viewing angle are just ok, but are miles better than the vg248qe, and come great out of the box. I'm using the rtings settings with racing profile, 100r, 91g, 93bAnd the best part of the monitor is the motion clarity. Even 360 hz panels have smeary frames, but even without ELMB the testufo website looks very clear. All in all, I highly reccommend this monitor, especially for neurodivergent gamers who prefer to fiddle and not stick to one thing for very long.Oh, and one last thing. I'm gonna share with you a secret formula.GSYNC + VSYNC (forced in gpu control panel) + Cap 3 frames below your monitor's refresh rate (277 or 237) + ELMB (optional).

A needed update.
Re: VG258QM variant.--Picture and color--I've heard and did my own research on TN vs. IPS vs. VA technologies, and decided that since my previous monitor was a TN, I should stick with that, so I could possibly integrate my new monitor with my old.Wow, was I in for a shock. For all the noise about how TN washes out colors, and isn't as sharp, or doesn't handle depth well, this monitor was a shock to the system compared to my older model. Side by side, the color depth feels (if not just IS) very true to life, and I hadn't realized I'd been using what looking back seems like a blue filter on my world for a while now. It's so good, I've had to use references like photos, my phone, and other people to really get my head around it, because I was so used to my older TN.If you're worried about color depth on a TN type panel? For my experience, this should be a comforting experience.--Build Quality--I love this base. I'm not going to use it, since I have a VESA armature for multi monitor, but I still love it. Solid, well made, nicely articulate, and snug once you find a position. If I wasn't using armatures, I'd happily have this on my desk.--Menus and whatnot--Standard array of settings, for color, performance, and whatnot. Good depth of choice, once you get used to the scheme of things. Little menu joystick for toggling around, makes navigating less arcane.Overall, I'm so happy with this monitor, I'm going to get another, or one very similar. Despite having a dual monitor setup, I've had my second one off, as it's older and I can't abide the color difference and lack of clarity in comparison. This really raised the bar.

Decent quality/brightness but AMAZING for 270-280 htz gameplay!
I stream/game on almost a daily basisNeeded a new monitor that could do the current max amount of htz/frames it could do for Free Sync as I'm gonna switch to an AMD GPU soon, so I got this.So far it works BEAUTIFULLY on my PC and is a perfect guinea pig as I'm using a NVIDIA card rn.The only negatives I can really say with this monitor are mainly the brightness and colors, but it really doesn't bother me as I get used to it.If you want the HIGHEST end (So far) AMD Freesync/Adaptive Sync monitor out there, then get this!

Rock solid high-refresh display.
Asus TUF series have been REALLY good about being 'budget' tier for top-of-the-line performance items. This monitor is rock solid. It's not the ROG tier, but you... really don't need it. Functionally it's great, color performance is great, latency is great, do you really need the extra cost for marginally useful quality of life items and over-designed look and color scheme in your face? It's a solid 280 hz monitor. I bought the TN panel version instead of the IPS by accident, but still immensely happy with it, including color performance.

Been using this monitor for over a year. No complaints.

When it works, it works great
I love this monitor, but it has a single issue. It occasionally switches down to 144hz and I have to restart my computer in order for it to go back up to 240hz. Also I didnt find that it was very clear that the monitor is a 240hz monitor where you can overclock it to 280hz. 240 is more than enough but if there are better options that just do 240, settle for that. I could barely notice the hop from 144 to 240 (i can now after using it for a while) and I aboslutely doubt that I could tell the difference between 240 and 280. The screen looks incredible though, compared to my old monitor, everything looks so much crisper despite it being the same resolution.

Great for gaming
This monitor is great, it has a fast refresh rate and 0.5ms response time. One thing to note though, you are going to have to do a little bit of tuning to the settings to get the colors accurate. But besides that, the monitor is flawless.

Still a great monitor for gaming and image editing by todays standard
ASUS TUF Gaming 24.5” 1080P HDR Monitor VG258QM - Full HD, 280Hz (Supports 144Hz), 0.5ms, Extreme Low Motion Blur Sync, G-SYNC Compatible, DisplayHDR 400, Speaker, DisplayPort HDMI, Height AdjustableOutstanding monitor for gaming. Liquid smooth performance. Blacks are excellent for my use given the price tag for 1080P. Excellent contrast. To take advantage of NVIDIA G−SYNC be sure you have nvidia card! I love the viewing angle on this monitor unlike other cheap monitors. Crisp sharp images and flicker free performance makes this a joy to look at for long periods of time. The stand is height adjustable. Cant rotate CW or CCW 90degrees which is convenient because of cable management direction. You can remove the monitor from its mount and expose the standard VESA mount points in order to mount on your own desk mountOut of box, it doesnt look that well calibrated IMO. I use spyderproX to calibrate my monitor to reasonable spec for RGB. I use it to also do Adobe Lightroom editing and paper prints so calibration is essential.Built-in speaker is "meh". Not that great. But in a pinch it works. Honestly nobody expects built-in monitor speakers to be used for anything other than mediocre. It is just nice to have when you mainly use headphones anyway -- and like the option to go speaker-mode for sharing some video clip sound with others temporarily. Has headphone out too!I think by todays 2021 standard 1080p is dated. So buying this monitor at > $300 is a bit much but if you are able to snag a deal on warehouse deals for sub $200 then i think you will be pretty happy with this monitor.
