Absolutely essential for smoking. Great customer service from Maverick in USA.
I bought a Weber Smokey Mountain and had heard about these, and I was thinking do I really need it? The answer is if you are doing smoking, this is really a mandatory piece of kit- you simply cannot do it as well without some sort of dual thermometers. You need a thermometer to monitor the internal temps of the meat so you know when it is about done, when it has hit the stall etc. You also need to monitor the temperature of the pit to keep it within the best smoking temp zone. Don't even bother attempting to rely on the thermometer in the lid of the WSM- mine is about 40 degrees too low when compared to the temperature on the top grate. If I had been looking at that, I would have been smoking everything at nearly 300 degrees plus!So how does this work. As others have said it is not the most intuitive in terms of button presses, but once you have done it once you are fine. Essentially set each probe to either monitor the pit or a meat (can have both doing exactly as you wish) and set a temperature alarm for the meat or a temperature range for the pit (depending on what I am smoking I tend to have my pit temp range at 200 to 275 I always work in Fahrenheit for BBQ for some reason ). The thermometer comes with 2 clips so you can put one (or two if you wish) probes on the grate of the pit to monitor the temp at grate level. Then essentially the receiver unit will continually update and tell you the temps - so if like me you have one in the piece of meat it is telling you what the meat temp is, the other the pit. You then monitor it from wherever you are in your house and garden (range isn't bad) and an alarm sounds as your meat hits temp or your pit gets too high or low (allowing you to go out and close or open vents etc).As stated this is essential- I just sit inside knowing the two essential temps are continuously monitored- not sure how I could smoke so well without it.A few things. First it is only accurate to within 4 degrees. I have a Thermopen which is calibrated to 0.4 centigrade and the Mavericks read at least 2 - 4 degrees higher. Second, the Maverick can read a few degree difference between the two probes. The first one I got was between 4 and 6 degrees difference but I emailed Maverick and they sent me a new transmitter unit and this one is 2 degrees difference. Great service by the way from Maverick. Also if you are using a probe thermometer, particularly in chicken you need to be aware that the breast can be a good 10 degrees higher than the rest of the bird and 2 birds can be quite different without rotation in the pit. Ideally therefore you will combine this with a really good probe thermometer- which you can use to test the various parts of the meat when the Maverick is telling you it is just about there- the Thermopen is superb- overall for the two it is quite an outlay but then you will be kitted out to do the job really well. The transmitter units are rain proof albeit if it was really raining hard I may put it in a plastic bag. The transmitter comes with a little metal hanging clip which hands beside the lid on the WSM. The receiver has a pop out stand on it and an orange glowing backlight when a button is pressed. You need a small Philips screwdriver to get the battery compartment open on the transmitter as screws compress a water seal.

It is excellent, if slightly unintuitive to use
I've had this thermometer a year now. It is excellent, if slightly unintuitive to use. I would certainly recommend that the company look at the user when designing the operating system. I am fairly gadget savvy, but keep a set of instructions to hand for this one. I use this gadget weekly so it isn't unfamiliarity either. Once set up however it is excellent. The remote display lets me be anywhere in the house/garden and the signal still gets through easily. After 12 months I am currently replacing one of the probes after it appears to have faltered, but this is fairly common according to other users and the probes can be purchased easily for about £8. I love it, but if one comes out with a more user friendly controller I would certainly trade it in.

Great gadget, has a Celsius option, but also triggers my Byron Digital Door-Bells !
I really like this unit especially as it has a Celsius option as well. I concur with the comments in the other 4 and 5 star reviews although I think its very much on the pricey side. Instructions aren't particularly clear either, but its one of those gadgets that you can 'kinda suss-out' enough to get it working quite easily. Note you have to switch the transmitter on within 2 minutes of switching on the receiver as the transmitter sends a registration code when first powered on. If you don't do this the receiver won't pick up the transmitter and you won't get any temperature read-outs.Byron Digital Bells - It also has one other peculiarity specific to my house. I have a number of Byron digital door bells plugged in throughout the house. This unit will ring them every couple of seconds whenever its being used, so clearly its picking up the transmitted signal as a bell push ! I basically have to turn off the Byron bells whenever I'm using the ET-733. I suspect that other Maverick models may have the same issue. Still I love it. Perfect for the control freaks among us. Would be a great prezzie for the BBQ'er who has nearly everything !

Superb for BBQs, especially those tending smokers overnight
I bought this to use on a Weber smokey mountain smoker BBQ. Tending to use this at weekend afternoons I often found myself starting the smoker at 10-11pm the night before (often pork shoulder / beef brisket can smoke for 15hrs or more). Tending the bbq through the night is really tiring or I often found myself waking up in the morning with it too hot or cold.Since buying this remote thermometer it's made the whole process much easier and simpler. I now set it to alarm at set max / min temperatures, hop off to bed once the smoker is a stable temperature and then sleep through. Last time i slept like a log till 5-30am when the alarm went off as temperatures had dropped too much. A quick change of air flow and I was back to bed for several more hours sleep. The unit has performed without fault 4 times thus far and is a great gadget, despite the wife barely containing her view of its extravagance. My only small worry is leaving the transmitter overnight in case of rain, my jury rigged solution is to seal it in a plastic sandwich bag with an elastic band which has done the trick thus far.Recommended.

You need to know the internal temp! #Meat #Gamechanger
Good for giving you the temperature inside the BBQ and also inside the meat. Until I got this, I had no idea what the temperature was inside the joint of beef or why it mattered. Now I get it and it's a game changer. When the internal temperature of the joint hits 55 degs C, the meat is rare; at 65 it's medium and at 75 it's well done. When it hits 90 it's perfect for shredding! The monitor allows you to watch it all happen from the other side of the house. Only problem is that it's not obvious how to set the various temperature alerts. Needs a bit of Googling but eventually you'll figure it out. At least, it took me a while. But all in all, a great addition to the Big Green Egg accessories!
