He's got style and a groovy smile...
Hong Kong Phooey is a memorable '70's cartoon about a super-hero dog whose real name is Penry, whose Kung Fu seems to go wrong all the time. He always wins however, with a little help from his side-kick cat Spot who is always on hand to save the day but without recognition or reward.Penry (voiced by Scatman Crothers) works as a "mild-mannered" janitor in the police-station, eaves-dropping on the conversations of Rosemary the telephone operator and generally annoying the Sarge through his incompetent bungling. He transforms into his alter-ego Hong-Kong Phooey by leaping into the bottom drawer of a filing cabinet and emerging (with some assistance from Spot) from the top drawer in his mask and red Kung Fu costume. The show has a very memorable theme tune which was covered by Sublime some years ago. The picture-quality is generally very good although there are one or two places where it probably needs touching up. The collection comes on two discs, there being 31 short adventures grouped into two adventures per episode, apart from the very last one (which is longer). There are no extras but you can access the individual adventures from the menu. It's all pretty harmless cartoon fun, although I understand that a live-action film is currently being made, which doubtless will involve a great deal of modern technology. But these modern adaptations lack the charm of the originals on which they are based. So buy this DVD and see the original as it was meant to be seen. The younger you are the louder you will laugh, of course.

A pleasant trip down memory lane
I used to watch this when I was at Infant school and had great fun watching it again. I bought it mainly for nostalgia, but it's a pretty good cartoon in its own right.

Number 1 Super Guy!
We bought this for my six year old son (and his Mum!) as he is into the 70's Scooby Doo and has seen Wacky Races on Boomerang a few times. He loves it! It really stands up well, and is a lot better than some of the more modern cartoons which just seem like half an hour adverts for toys or trading cards. The stories are fun and silly, and the plots are very thin indeed, but it just adds to the nostalgic charm. My six year old thinks they are very funny, and has taken to walking round with a book of Kung Fu! He has had to be warned a few times about trying to karate chop people in his enthusiasm, but nothing serious. All in all, a great blast from the past for us 30 or 40 somethings, and a relief for the kids from the modern day rubbish.

Brings back so many good memories ......
Superb. Lovely to see this chap again. The kids love him too. For the price paid this offers incredible value for money. Nice packaging and all 31 episodes presented on 2 discs. I was surprised to see that the old video format actually fits the whole screen on my new telly. Who could ask for more ? Mr Phooey on a 55" screen looking better than ever. The colours are brilliant and the sound is good too. Very pleased.
