Yes, well done to the extreme ... Took a lot of emotion out of me ... & like them it floated back, & I carried on.

An unusual story. A wild setting and a cast including two of our great acting dames. What could be better than this?

A great film with great stars. Delivered on time and at a great price.

This is a very good film, which I found absorbing.It may not suit everybody,as the subject matter does not really fit into any of the genres popular in modern movies. It is the story of two elderly single ladies, living alone in a large house on the edge of the beautiful coastline of Cornwall. One morning an event occurs which turns their very ordinary lives upside down. A young man is washed up onto the shore next to their home, more dead than alive.The ladies bring him into their home, and nurse him back to health. The young man,s background is a mystery, as he can speak no English, and tells them he is Polish. As the ladies try to teach him some English, gradually more is revealed. This is a seemingly gentle film, as he is gradually adopted into the local community, and the two ladies become increasingly attached to him. The film deals sensitively with the shifting relationships between the main characters, and the emotions aroused within the two ladies. The character played by Judy Dench is drawn romantically to the young man, and she struggles inwardly with the dawning sel-realisation of what is happening to her. The other old lady played by Maggie Smith, is horrified when she becomes aware of what is taking place within her sister, and her disapproval is in constant conflict with her love for her sister, and her own affection for the young man. Any body who thinks that when people become old, they no longer have the intense feelings usually attributed to youth, should see this film.There is joy, but also pain, love, but also jealousy. As the threads gradually weave together and the plot evolves, all the main characters are seen to grow and the story ends as it began, with the two ladies once again alone, wandering along the beach. It has been an interlude in their lives, however, it has changed them forever. This film goes below the outward surface of everyday life, to reveal how deeply the human heart can feel in the realm of relationships. It is not for any one who is looking for thrills and excitement, but its intuitive portrayal of the complex emotions aroused, by the coming of this young man, touched me deeply, and I think it will do the same for others.

I liked everything about this film and have watched it many times. The sensitive way in which the two actors played their parts, so convincing, and the young man that they were caring for, so natural in his behaviour and of course, the apparent playing of the violin, magical. If you haven't seen this film, you really ought to. It's a classic to be watched more than once.

Great Actors brilliantly Cast. Lovely Story not spoilt with bad language or violence suitable for all ages.

A lovely, well-observed story. The two leading women are national treasures for good reason. The cast was well chosen and the acting throughout was excellent. This is a gentle film, the sort only British cinema can do brilliantly.

Bellissimo film. Lo cercavo da tantissimo tempo in Dvd e finalmente l'ho trovato. Le due autrici protagoniste sono una garanzia. La storia è toccante e delicata.

Ein kleiner Juwel ist dieser Film, auch nach zweitem oder dritten Mal - es weckt wunderbare Gefühle, die Musik unterstreicht die ganz einfache Geschichte.Nichts weltbewegendes geschieht in der Story, außer dass die Welt von einer neuen Katastrophe steht (der Zweite Weltkrieg..)Cornwall; 1936 in einem Haus, das Mer ist ganz nahe wohnen die Schwestern Ursula und Janet Widdington (Dame Judi Dench und Dame Maggie Smith). Nach einer stürmischer Nacht sehen sie am Strand einen Menschen liegen. Ängstlich und besorgt laufen sich den Weg hinab. Der junge Mann lebt und die Hilfe kommt zu der rechten Zeit.Er kommt in das Haus, wird dort gepflegt. Nur versteht er kein Wort. Janet, die etwas Deutsch spricht, erfährt, dass der junge Mann aus Polen kommt und Andrzej (Andrea) Marowski heißt. Mit dem Gestrandeten kommt das Leben in das alte Haus. Ihre Haushilfe, die resolute Dorcas (Miriam Margolyes) nimmt die praktischen Dingen in ihre Hände, die Schwestern bringen ihm Englisch bei.Dabei ist besonders Ursula von dem Jungen angetan. Sie spricht mit Janet, was man alles für ihn tun kann, sein Beinist dank Dr. Mead (David Warner) gut geheilt.Eher zufällig erfahren Ursula und Janet, dass Andrea Violine spielt. Und das sehr gut, wie sie selbst beurteilen können. Im Dorf lebt zu Zeit eine russische Malerin Olga Daniloff (eher Olga Danilowa, das wäre richtiger); (gespielt von Natascha McElhone), die in Andrea sofort ein großes Talent sieht. Ihr Bruder, Boris, ist ein Konzertpianist. Sie will dem jungen Polen helfen. Und ihr gefällt der Mann auch.Sie schreibt ihn einen Brief, aber den bekommt Andrea "komischerweise" nicht.Das Dorf hat den jungen Pianisten mit offenen Armen empfangen. Er könnte, so die Schwestern, bei ihnen für immer leben, oder? Englisch lernen, das Haus bekommen und sich wohlfühlen.Bei Ursula sind alle Gefühle, die sie seit vielen Jahren "vergessen" hat, wieder da. Sie sagt zu Janet, sie habe wenigstens "ihren" Peter gehabt, obwohl er im Krieg gefallen ist. Sie weiß, wie sich die Liebe anfühlt, sie, Ursula, hat das NIE gekannt, nur darüber gelesen.In der Nacht schleicht sich Ursula still in das Zimmer und sieht Andrea beim Schlafen zu. Dann ist sie glücklich. Auch Dorcas bemerkt, wie fröhlich jetzt die Damen sind.Andrea spricht jetzt etwas englisch. Und sagt, er will nach Amerika. Die Herzen der Schwestern werden schwer dabei, sie hoffen immer noch..., wie dr. Mead, die sich in die Malerin verliebt (und dabei auch den Altersunterschied vergiesst).Das Meer hat es gegeben, das Leben hat es genommen. Andrea kann nicht in Cornwall bleiben. Sein Platz ist die Bühne, er hat den Zeug zu einem Weltpianisten. Und das nimmt er wahr. Er schreibt, dass man ihn am 10. 11., an einem Freitag im Radio hören kann.Das tun die Menschen im Dorf, zwei DAMEN sind dabei - in London. Die Musik verzaubert sie und alle anderen auch.Ursula und Janet wissen, ihr Werk ist getan, "ihr" Andrea hat jetzt seinen Weg vor sich.Ein Film der leisen Töne, die beiden Schauspielerinnen, beide 1934 (Dezember, geboren), die DAMEN, die KÜNSTLERINNEN, Dame Dench, Dame Smith RETTEN/TRAGEN den Film von der ersten Sekunde. Ihre "Liebe" trägt die Reinheit des Herzens, die Güte, die Erinnerungen an Tage vor Jahrzehnten, all das hat sie in sich. Sie prägt sich in unsere Herzen, macht sie weicher, liebenswürdiger... Besser. Warum sollte eine alte Dame nicht eine JUNGE Liebe empfinden, in ihrem Herz das Flattern fühlen? Sie tut das einzig Richtige, nur etwas später.Wenn man einige Jahre auf dieser Welt lebt, dann versteht man sowas viel besser...Daniel Brühl kann sich in Film nur schwierig behaupten (er spielt gut), ich kann mir kaum vorstellen, ob ein Schauspieler DEN ZWEI das Wasser reichen konnte. Natascha McElhone (sie hat die junge Mrs. Dalloway gespielt) ist auch nur...da.Warum also 5 ganze P? Weil die DAMEN zehn kriegen würden.Und, weil an der Violine Joshua Bell zu hören ist. Ich habe ihn zweimal live erleben/hören dürfen. Ein Genie!Nimmt euch Zeit, bei so einen Film ist die Welt für kurze Zeit besser!Charles Dance als Regisseur (man kennt ihn), der Film aus dem Jahr 2004, die Damen waren um die 70 Jahre jung.

ラベンダーの咲く庭で平和に暮らしている老姉妹に突然現れた若者にまるで青春がよみがえったようにこころ騒がせるふたり。老婦人達に近い年齢になっている私にはその心理状態が理解できてほほえましく心温まる一作品です。NHKで日本語字幕放映はありましたが英語字幕で見るとさらに感動しました。

No entiendo como la crítica de esta película puede ser tan baja...para mi es simplemente una obra de arte. Si de verdad te dejas sumergirte en la película y te pones en la piel de los personajes es simplemente brutal, sin olvidarte, claro esta, de que esta basada en un hecho real, porque para mi en este tipo de películas es muy importante . Altamente recomendable!. Es mas si no la ves y te gusta el buen cine, te estarás perdiendo una historia inolvidable.
