Fun Colors, Fun Patterns - Perfect for Beginners
UPDATE (4/12/16): I much prefer this book over 150 All-Time Favorite Crochet Blocks. At the risk of repeating what others have written, the reason why is that this book provides the yardage/meterage (of worsted weight/aran weight yarn) you would need for each color in a combination in order to make a baby, lap, and bed blanket respectively. Also, all of the squares (except the ones in the back labeled as smaller or larger) are approximately the same size, so you can combine them any way you like. Each pattern includes the stitch count for each round. Finally, this book includes a section on blocking and joining, information on yarn textures, color combinations, and edgings, as well as an illustrated guide to various stitches. None of those things can be said of 150 All-Time Favorite Crochet Blocks. 100 Colorful Granny Squares is great for beginners, but if you're new to the craft, I would say steer clear of 150 Crochet Blocks for now. It has several of the same blocks as this book, but a lot less information, which might make it a frustrating reference for a beginner. (I've been crocheting for about a year as of this update and I find it frustrating. You can read my review of it to find out why.) UPDATE ENDS.I'm a relative novice when it comes to crocheting, and I wanted a book that would allow me to make some colorful and interesting granny squares while practicing various stitches and techniques at the same time. This book fits those requirements while also allowing me to indulge my love of bright colors. For those who prefer blocks or squares with more subdued color schemes, the same publishing house has a different book called 150 All-Time Favorite Crochet Blocks . I own both books--100 Colorful Granny Squares and 150 All-Time Favorite Crochet Blocks--and I like both; there is a bit of overlap, but the blocks/squares in the book of 150 look more sophisticated (read: high-class) because of the color selections.

Difficulty following the instructions
The squares are beautiful to view in the book but I seem to be the only one having difficulty following the instructions, although I read most of the tutorial pages at the beginning of the book. I am a low-intermediate crocheter and have been doing basic stitches and patterns for years. However, I am getting stuck in instructions such as (from a pattern designated as beginner):“ROUND 3: Join Color C, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), *(2 dc, tr, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, [dc in dc, dc in ch-1 sp] 3 times**, dc in dc; rep from * twice more, then from *to** once more, join with slip at into top of beginning ch. End Color C. (48 Sts)”Where it says “rep from * twice more” the instructions don’t specify where this step ends. Are the instructions referring only to the stitches in parentheses? Or do they go beyond those?I have found many of the directions to be equally vague and so it has really stymied my attempts to complete a project. I’m still enthusiastically trying and have even begun re-writing the instructions for myself for more clarity. But yet, I can’t just smoothly move through an entire set of instructions without rereading them repeatedly to try to understand exactly how to put the stitches together to achieve the desired pattern. If anyone would care to chime in with home helpful suggestions/advice, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Not your mother's granny square afghan!
This is my go-to book for all things flower grannie square. I absolutely adore Leonie Morgan's books, but this is my favorite. Each of the granny squares include three colorways and two variations on the theme. She includes four projects with complete instructions for throws and pillows. The photographs are large and colorful and Leonie avoids murky-hued projects that hide the details.Graphs are included -- my deal breaker -- no graphs, no purchase.I had to hunt for the information on the type of yarn and the hook size for the projects -- " page 21, "Gauge" -- "... worsted-weight yarn and a size H (5 mm) crochet hook."Terms are in American style. The guide in the front of the book includes information on stitches, color changes, surface crochet, blocking and joining, edging, and embellishments.I have used other books for crochet flower patterns, but I always come back to Leonie's for inspiration. Good job!!

Plenty of Variety and lots of new ideas
This book is inspiring! Everything from the beginner to the more advanced enthusiast is covered. It's a wonderful collection of traditional squares, as well as lots of new ones. Just picking it up is a joy because of the bright, cheery colors. I like the inclusion of edgings too, particularly the dangling flowers - so pretty! The instructions are clear and precise with wonderful photography. Sit down with your children or grandchildren with this book - show them the vibrant pictures - then delight them with how the picture comes to life in your hands! We need to teach our little ones to carry on this wonderful, creative pastime, and this book is a great way to do it! Want something a little more challenging? This book has that too. Charming and refreshing designs make this book a winner in my opinion. I recommend this book to everyone, as something you can come back to again and again. One day it will be passed down to the next generation as a wonderful teaching guide and inspiration for future projects. Highly recommended! (by Ken's wife!)

Easy to follow
I am a crochet beginner. I was drawn to granny squares by the fun color combinations and the variety of different styles. I like that granny squares are super small. I can be super creative in small spurts. I don't have as much time as I would like for this hobby. But granny squares are fun and offer limitless possibilities of color and style combinations and I can turn one out in no time. This book was easy to follow, even for a beginner. I have learned a few of my favs by memory but dig this book out as a reference when I want to try something new

Great patterns!
These are different from the usual granny square patterns. They are unique and fun. The patterns range from beginner to advanced. This is well worth the money.Have fun!

Lots of good features, but marred by the yarn used
There are indeed 100 squares and two different colourways are suggested for each as well as a third square as a slight pattern variation of the original. There is a section at the beginning with well-illustrated guides to the basic stitches, guidance on reading patterns and charts, and the thing I liked best, a short section on working with colour. For each square pattern, yarn requirements, in metres and yards, are given for throws in three sizes from baby to bed. This would be really useful if they were not using Aran/10 ply and a 5 mm crochet hook - I wanted to work in double knitting. There are a few projects scattered throughout the book, but again they are all worked in thick wool. They look really beautiful and are quite inspiring, but the thick yarn used throughout has deterred me from attempting anything from this book yet. All squares and projects are graded for difficulty level, which could be useful. This is a pretty book which could be perfect for some people, but for me there are better books out there. "Granny Squares" by Susan Pinner gets my vote!

Disappointed
This book is without doubt good value for money, but print instructions are very small, also feint, quantity of yarn is shown in yards, which if purchasing in UK, can be difficult to calculate how much is needed, would have been helpful if gram alternative could have been shown

So much more than granny squares
This book is terrific, I bought it because it is called 100 Granny Squares but it contains so much more. There are hints and tips as well. I have been crocheting for around 50 years, but I think you never stop learning. I am certainly learning plenty from this lovely book.

I love this book. Simply scrumptious!
I love this book. I'm new to crochet, and this book could be used as an raw beginner's book, since it contains 12 pages that provide a brief introduction to materials, techniques, stitches, patterns and charts. However I would recommend a complete novice buys a book, such as Crochet (Dk) , as well as this book. Once you can do the common stitches (maybe after 1 weeks practice), you'll find this book is addictive, and this is the only book I'd take on holiday, along with some yarn and hooks. The designs in the book are simply scrumptious, and each design is beautifully illustrated, described in words, and where relevant, accompanied by a very clear chart. Each design also describes the skill level, and how much yarn is required. Crochet (Dk)

Beautifully illustrated
I bought this book for myself as a cheeky Christmas present, wanting to use it to add variety to a pesonalised crocheted blanket I am putting together for a friend. The designs are beautiful and I am looking forward to trying every single one!The designs are rated either 'beginner', 'intermediate' or 'advanced', although I felt the book may be easier to sort through if these were orgainsed into the beginner patterns at the front, then intermediate then advanced rather than scattered through the book as they are. The beginner designs are beautiful but in order to follow the patterns I think you would need a fairly good understanding of the basic skills and stitches. There are illustrations of the various stitches at the front of the book but, again, I think these would probably be serve better as a reminder rather than a first time tutorial of the different stitches. There are loads of great ideas in this book as well as some ideas for further embellishments and personal touches which can be added to your designs such as different borders and edging and how to add beads, ribbons etc.Well worth a read for a keen crocheter :)
