The Early Years 1965 1972 (Box 10 x 9 x 8 5 x 45 tours)

I have been a Pink Floyd fan ever since my freshmen year of high school (2011-12) and as time went on, I became more intrigued with their early years (essentially the era this box covers). Honestly, things like Dark Side and The Wall just dont do too much for me as they used to. Yes, I love those albums and everything they have done but it triggers me that everyone tends to either overlook or ignore the early part of their career. And the day that this box set was finally announced, I was one happy man.With everyone saying "they are bootlegging the bootlegers", that isnt necessarily the case. If whoever was in charge of the resotration proccess (legitimate sources within the PF camp), one would assume they would restore whatever audio/video content to their fullest potential (to make better than what is out on the bootleg market). So far I am skimming my way through the CDs (only caught the Cambridge Station DVD so far in terms of video content) and I am blown away with what they have given us. The quality of this set is astounding. After discovering that this project dated back to 1994, I am so happy it came out now considering the advancements in audio/visual restoration technology. I did manage to watch the "Beginnings" special on the BBC and the quality there was amazing and I knew right away we were in for a treat!Aside from the typical stuff thats been bootlegged (BBC Sessions, concert broadcasts), I am pleased to see things like "Roger's Boogie" on here! I am a diehard Floyd fan and even this I wasnt even aware of, nor has the session ever been documented in any Floyd chronology book I own. A real treat! Even the John Latham sessions were cool to see on here. The remixes of "Scream Thy Last Scream" and "In The Beechwoods" had my jaw dropped! The remastering of the old singles alone blew my mind. Such great quality!!!!With that being said, I asked myself the daring question: is there anything missing? They couldve included the studio version of "Biding My Time" but since it is still available on the Relics compilation. The unreleased live version of "Interstellar Overdrive" from the show that was recorded for the live half of Ummagumma couldve been cool but I suppose for time restraints it was left off or not in the bands archive (I own it on a vinyl bootleg). The two 1966 studio tracks (Interstellar Overdrive and Nick's Boogie) couldve been neat audio gems but luckily a part of that session is retained on the DVD.The only thing that still sturs my mind is the Obfusc/ation volume. What was the deal with the Pompeii CD? Was it supposed to be added in the set? Was it supposed to be a stand alone release that got mixed up with the box set? Someone fill me in on this.For a die hard fan, this set is essential. For the person that knows only Dark Side onwards and wants to know more of this area, I would recommend the Cre/ation compilation. I picked mine up at the record store I work at (for the sake of being a completist) and that was perfect enough! The box set just made it even more worthwhile!On the other hand, I do live in the US and Amazon UK was the cheapest offer for the set and I payed extra to get it shipped quicker and it arrived in one piece (got it yesterday, Monday the 14th). No damages!

OK, (inexcusably) faulty Blu-ray discs in the first few batches aside (I got mine replaced without question - arrived in the post within three days), I have now had three months loving this set. Ironically, Floyd obsessives have (somewhat madly) mused that the faulty discs will themselves be rather rare as curiosities going forward. Back to sanity - to hear and see all these early performances for the first time has been an overwhelming joy. Dreadful clothes, dreadful hairstyles. Comical cameo film and video appearances. To watch Syd is sad, to watch Rick's rare musical flourishes too is sad, but happy too. RIP lads. It's all, of course, very much of its time, and there's SO much of it! Rare guitars, extremely rare keyboards and pedals, and amps too. David and Roger often meld seamlessly - a treat which we will most likely never witness again. Rick always seems to play better when it's off-the-cuff. Nick always seems to be the most... well... 'out'... of it all, until the drumming kicks in - THEN wonderful things happen - fabulous. Too many superlatives? No, not really; the sound quality varies of course, but you have to remember it has been lovingly rescued and restored from ancient media; some even from domestic sources (particularly the pieces wilfully destroyed by the BBC) so from that angle it's brilliant. The 8mm and 16mm film footage has been remarkably well restored; but not 'too' restored - the original 'feel' it still very present. Some of my favourite Floyd bass, keys and guitar riffs (Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, More, Obscured by Clouds, Saucerful of Secrets) are exposed here in a much more raw form, which lays them out as just as brilliant as I first thought. You can almost feel how the tracks emerged from nothing at all (or maybe from elongated jam sessions or live performances) to what we now know from the officially released early Pink Floyd albums. Well done to the surviving members of Pink Floyd to be brave enough to release something that shows them evolving musically; after all I don't think they needed the money. Love it. Haven't seen the last disc yet, but was impressed enough to review before the end of my journey. Price is fluctuating but mainly upwards now so worth picking up. Cheap considering all the years spent planning and the thousands of hours spent gathering, restoring and all the time and effort getting copyright and permissions aligned from all sources. The boxed set is physically well made - treat it with respect and it will last. I am playing the 45RPM singles through just one more time as I write this. Marvellous. Enjoy.

Este ha sido el boxset mas grande que he adquirido, es enorme... Si eres un fan de Pink Floyd previo la era comercial de The Dark Side of The Moon, recomiendo puedas considerar adquirirlo, aunque su precio es bastante alto (yo pase casi 3 años monitoreando hasta que encontre la oportunidad de un precio accesible)... Esta caja editada el pasado 11 de noviembre contiene siete libros o cartuchos con varios cd's y dvd's/blu ray's por cada uno de ellos. Cada libro comprende un período determinado en el recorrido de la banda, es decir, un libro o cartucho abarca un año aproximadamente; exceptuando el primer libro que recopila el período 1965 - 1967. La caja presenta un muy buen diseño y acabado en general: los siete cartuchos con profusión de fotografías del grupo, además de una serie de replicas de carteles de conciertos y entradas por cada uno de ellos, pósteres de la época y programas de actuaciones; y finalmente, los cinco primeros singles de Pink Floyd en formato 45rpm. Hasta aquí todo bien, pero a partir del quinto libro-cd, el material a incluir va menguando en calidad y en cantidad. O una de dos, o esto se debe a que el responsable de compilar todo el material ha ido perdiendo interés a medida que avanzaba el proyecto; o bien por falta de material en sí. Prefiero pensar en lo segundo. El último libro/cd, que se incluye como "regalo" para aquellos que adquieran la caja completa, es la que peor calidad de audio y audio - visual presenta. Las dos películas incluidas en dicho cartucho vienen sin subtítulos y además no hay ninguna memorabilia. También echo de menos que el autor o autores hablen de las fuentes de donde surge todo el material, ya que la historia de la banda ya la conocemos. No quiero con este comentario decepcionar al posible interesado, pero me veo en la obligación de dar mi opinión y terminar con lo positivo de este boxset. El material audiovisual de los primeros cuatro libro/cd's/dvd's tiene un valor incalculable; así como el material de audio. Es de una gran calidad sonora y termina con el mito de la mala calidad de algunos bootlegs. Los archivos audiovisuales están recogidos, en su mayor parte, de programas especiales en la Tv francesa, país donde tuvo bastante repercusión Pink Floyd. Y los archivos exclusivamente de audio provienen de las sesiones de radio para la BBC. Abundante material para sumergirse en ese período de la banda antes de romper a nivel mundial con la publicación de The Dark Side of the Moon.

"Irrtümlich" liegt in der vorletzten Box der Stereo Mix von "Live in Pompeii" bei, mit einem zusätzlichen Outtake "Careful with that Axe, Eugene", obwohl doch in dem Booklet der 2016 Remix von "Obscured by Clouds" aufgelistet wird. Deshalb wurde diese CD in einem simplen Pappschuber beigelegt (Solche Scherze erwarte ich von Bands wie "The Residents")Vermutlich haben Pink Floyd sämtliche Radio Shows zusammengesucht, die sie noch finden könnten und viele sind in ausgezeichneter Qualität. Dort, wo der Sound hörbar mieser wird, entschuldigen sich die Verantwortlichen in den dazu gehörenden Booklets.Ich wusste z.B. nicht, dass Pink Floyd bereits 1965 bei DECCA 6 Stücke einspielte, die ganz klar dem Rock 'n' Roll zuzuordnen sind. Genauso wenig war mir die "John Latham" Session bekannt. Mir macht es Spaß die musikalische Entwicklung von Pink Floyd auf diesen CD's zu verfolgen. Der Höhepunkt von 1969 wird mit dem vollständigen Konzert "The Man and the Journey" gekrönt, das ich zwar schon als Radio Mitschnitt kannte, jedoch nicht komplett und nur mit den Kommentaren des niederländischen Radiosprechers. Viele BBC Recordings kamen bereits im Vorfeld als Bootlegs heraus und sind nun offiziell chronologisch geordnet.DVD's/BluRay'sDer Inhalt der DVD's und BluRay's ist absolut identisch und unterscheidet sich eher in der Dynamik (Samplerate) des Sounds.Als komplette Spielfilme liegen "More", "La Vallée" (OST dazu ist Obscured by Clouds) und "The Committee" vor, wobei zu dem letzteren Film nie ein Soundtrack herauskam, da dieser nur eine Plattenseite gehabt hätte und deshalb verworfen wurde. Die Musikvideos von "Live in Pompeii" liegen (bis auf das fehlende "Mademoiselle Nobs") im 5.1. Mix vor. Unzählige TV und Live Auftritte, Proben und Interviews aus GB, D, AUS, CH, B, F oder USA werden erstmals offiziell veröffentlicht. Einige Playback Auftritt wirken da zum Teil unfreiwillig (oder absichtlich provokativ) komisch, wenn Nick Mason ganz deutlich etwas anderes trommelt, als das zu hörende Schlagzeug.Ferner sind das komplette Album "Atom Heart Mother" und der einzelne Song "Echoes" im originalen Quad-Mix erhältlich,was man von den Immersion Boxen "The Dark Side of the Moon" und "Wish you were here" bereits kennt.Unsichtbares Easter Egg auf BluRay #5Wenn man die BluRay #5 mit einem Computer untersuchen kann, so wird man feststellen, dass es einen Quad-Mix und hochwertigen Stereo Mix von dem kompletten Album "Meddle" dort gibt. Es ist unmöglich dieses Easter Egg im Menu eines BluRay Players zu aktivieren, deswegen nenne ich es "unsichtbares" Easter Egg.7" (Singles)Einige Singles haben wunderschöne Bilder als Cover und andere sind nur in einer simplen Hülle ohne Bild. Ob diese Singles genauso erschienen sind kann ich nicht beurteilen- freue mich jedoch erstmals alle Singles (wenn auch nur als Reissue) in den Händen zu halten.Poster/ Flyer/ Konzertkarten etc.Hiermit wird man echt erschlagen! Unzählige kleine Zettelchen,Flyer, Konzertkarten, Faltblätter und Poster sind der Box ebenfalls beigelegt... mir erscheint es unmöglich darüber noch viele Worte zu verlieren.Fazit: Der hohe Preis ist für sehr viele Fans nur abschreckend und auch ich habe seit Monaten auf diese Box gespart. Für die meisten Konsumenten wird der Preis immer ausnahmslos übertrieben und zu hoch sein- ich kann dies nachvollziehen. Ich erkenne aber die Arbeit an, die in dieser Box steckt. Diese unzähligen Papier- Bild und Ton Dokumente sind für mich als Fan der frühen Phase ein wahrer Schatz. All diese Mühe scheint wohl den hohen Preis der Box auszumachen.Trostpflaster: Die einzelnen Boxen werden (bis auf die letzte Bonus Box) im Jahr 2017 separat käuflich zu erweben sein. Somit können sich Syd Barret mit dem Kauf der ersten Box zumindest die ganz frühe Phase abdecken aus der DECCA Zeit und den fehlenden 3 Stücken "In The Beechwoods", "Vegetable Man", "Scream Thy Last Scream" sowie die Session "John Latham Version 1 - 9".
