aaa and aa batteries only? Does it work with C or D size batteries?

C or D Size can not hold in that batteries postion. if you need use it, the only way need connect extra cables. You still can cut off that blue strap to have a try.

Why do the batteries get so dangerously hot?

are your batterys oriented right? spring on the minus end? new batterys or old? AA alkaline? if its hot immediatly it has a short, be sure to leave them bad feedback.

How long will two AA batteries power an Android smartphone?

Will this work on Samsung phones?

yes it sure does. I have used it on several different samsung phones. new and old and I haven't had an issue. keeping the batteries in it while using your phone at the same time tho, thats another story.
