Quality radio, great value
This radio is a big improvement on the early Baofeng radios that I have had for a few years. Quality seems very good and battery life using the supplied battery is excellent. Receive and transmit audio is good. Documentation does explain functions in English and the control buttons for them are shown. Details of how to do most things is missing. Programming is not easy without using a computer. At least for now, it does not use CHIRP software for programming as many radios from various manufacturers do. The software that is used, and can be downloaded, is fairly straightforward and it does work without too much trouble. It will work with the same usb interface cable that works with Chirp. So I used my Baofeng cable. However, it is not possible to clone a complete repeater list such as one used by a radio that used CHIRP or to read in a list in spreadsheet format, such as a .csv file. That makes programming repeaters quite tedious. Each repeater has to be entered one at a time. Importing repeater lists from an online directory would be great. For a radio boasting 200 memory channels there has to be an easier way to populate them. My guess is that these radios will be added sooner or later to the list of those that use Chirp. That would make transition to this radio much easier. So, UV-K5 gets a 5. Programming software a 3 or 4...

Great replacement for the Baofeng UV5R!
Amazing unit for the price. Easy to program, and the added features are nifty, including frequency and CTSS scanning (look at the reviews on YouTube for elaboration). The sound quality is decent, certainly not perfect, but signal quality is good, power is up to claim, and the second harmonic, with the antenna on (not plugged in to the frequency analyzer!) is acceptable.Remember: the antenna is a filter. As regards air band: forget it. It sounds awful, since it isn't real AM on this unit.I am ordering some more of these. There is new firmware for the updated unit that even provides a spectrum scan. These are fun, well built, and inexpensive. They are the Baofeng for this decade, in my opinion.Five stars.

Great features for the price
The feature that I like the most is the ability to read the frequency and tone of any UHF or VHF transmitter that is within a few feet. Having AM on the aircraft channel is good but the audio quality is is about a 5 out of 10 and the reason for the 4 star rating rather than 5 stars. Very featured packed for $29.99 delivered. Shipping was good in that it arrived the first day of the delivery window.

All there and in working order
Seems OK to me 5 star for what it is, talked fine and the receive seemed right on, clear on both TX/RX ,programmed by hand no issues. Didn't try PC Programme yet, 1 1/2 days so far so good. Seems like a decent build,

Tradeoffs - you get what you paid for
Have a small collection of Baofeng UV-82's which are basic but work well. Bought this for it's extended receive capabilities and display. It performs about the same as other radios in this class.- Enclosed charger has Asian AC plug on it. Charger is universal AC voltage, so will just adapt or replace the plug, but be forewarned.- Batteries? There appears to be no way to buy replacement or additional batteries on the market.- Overall build quality is slightly better than the Baofeng UV-5 radios, except:- The PTT key is extremely soft and light to activate. Not sure it will last.- Yes, there are borderline 2nd harmonic issues.- The speaker is intelligible, but is fairly thin sounding. Not a deal killer, but irritating at times.- AM is pretty much useless (one of the reasons I bought this). Their demodulator needs a lot of work. It is only intelligible when the signal is just above the noise floor. The moment it is strong enough to seemingly copy easily, the demod descends into horrible distortion, so I assume there is no RF AGC/limiting going on in DSP.- Not their fault, but this is NOT yet programmable in CHIRP. You have to use their software which works, but is a bit more clunky. Be prepared to take an hour or more if you want to set up the 200 memory slots.
