Q: what size templates come with the kit ? also, will the kit fit any router base ?

My kit has 2.5" and 1.5" templates. I don't know about any router base but it fit perfectly on my Porter Cable 7529 plunge router. Many holes it in so I would think it is universal. My suggestion would be to also get additional letters/number sets if you need several repeats.

Q: Do you need a plung router for this to work and does it help if you do have one

I have a standard Craftsman router which works great. Set to correct depth, start and push down and follow outside of letters. Practice first.

Q: Can you make vertical signs with the letters?

The kit does not come with vertical Alphabet stencils; the kit does come with vertical numbers. So, you can make vertical number signs, for example, to put a house address on the side of a mail box 4x4 post.

Q: what is optimal depth for 1/4 bit using 11/2 inch template

To achieve the best results, make multiple passes in increments of 1/4″ – 5/16″ deep until you have reached the desired depth of cut.
