Q: Will this keep my head from turning to the side while sleeping on my back?

Hello, this memory foam pillow can perfectly follow your spine's natural curvature and the memory foam responds to your weight and shape, giving you the support you need to sleep without pain. Your head will not easily turn to the side with slow rebound memory foam. You'll have good sleep with this pillow. Thank you.

Q: Do I need a separate pillow case to cover?

It has a cover on it much like one that would cover a memory foam mattress pad. It has a zipper in it so could be removed and washed. I use a satin pillow case on mine because of the texture. It doesn't fit well due to the pillow being oddly shaped but it does work.

I left it out for a few hours, and put a clean pillowcase on it right after. I didn't notice any scent other than the smell of my detergent.
