Q: How thick are these brackets? I'm concerned that, for the price, they are of heavy enough gauge to support the 20" housing when full of water.

They're plenty thick enough to hold the housing. I have (2) 4.5-inch x 10-inch Big Blue filter housings, and there's no problem at all. They'll be just fine for the 20-inch housings too. Just make sure your wall anchors are able to hold the weight as well.

Q: What are the correct screws to attach to the filter housing? From user comments this seems to be good to know.

Use a 3/8" corse thread bolt,also called a lag bolt. 3/4" long. Since the housing is plastic these type of bolts will thread right in.
