Why does it smell like burning metal when I use it? It toasts bread well, but has a horrible burning metal odor

The “bagel” function adjusts time, but still toasts both sides of the item in the slot. says so right in the manual. how is this a bagel function??

Is this toaster capable of toasting longer bread, like Aunt Millie's 12-grain, without having to flip it over, if you toast it in a vertical position?

Will this toaster just toast one slice of bread?
