Thunder in a coffee cup – best speaker in sub-5000 segment
REVIEW AFTER TWO WEEKS’ USESony caught thunder in a cup and called it SRS XB-100. This speaker is pretty loud and clear for its size, purpose and price. It is strictly meant for personal use or a small gathering of 6-8 people at best. Yet this little coffee mug outsmarts every other speaker below 5000 Rs.(Note – this speaker is not loud enough for a party. Those who feel that it is not loud enough for personal use may get an audiological evaluation to see if you have noise-induced hearing loss. Since hearing loss from loud noise (above 70 dB / 70% volume) is irreversible, try to reduce the loudness you listen to and follow 60:60 rule.)AUDIO QUALITYVocals are loud, crisp and clear. Bass is good but not over-the-top. Good treble. From my experience, I would rate SRS XB-100 for various purposes as below.Playing music files = 10/10Playing podcasts = 8/10Call quality = 8/10Playing YouTube videos = 7/10Playing Movies & Series = 7/10Generally, 50%-60% volume was sufficient for audio files to be clear and loud enough. Podcasts needed around 70%. YouTube videos, Movies & Series needed 70%-100% and they largely depended on the quality of file as well. Some old BBC documentaries and series played as clear as any music file at 60% volume whereas Avatar, LOTR series and Spiderman needed at least 80% volume.PORTABILITYThe MOST underrated aspect of this speaker. You could take it and hang it anywhere.CHARGING & BATTERY LIFEAbout 4 to 4.5 hours to charge fully. At around 60% volume, SRS XB-100 lasts for nearly 10 hours, 2 hours less than advertised. At full volume, it lasts nearly 6 hours. But it has no fast charging and the chord provided for charging is very small. These are the only cons I felt.SONY MUSIC CENTRE APPIt just tells you how much battery is left, allow connecting with other Sony speakers for stereo effects and updates the software. It serves no other purpose for this speaker.COMPARED TO OTHER SPEAKERS…….From below 5000 range, only Tribit MaxsoundPlus comes close in XB-100’s audio quality. Tribit XsoundGo is not even as good as the good old Sony SRS-XB13 which got replaced by XB-100. To me, XB-100 sounded better than Tribit Stormbox Micro 2, and even Marshall Willen. XB-100 sounds way better even than Sony’s own 24W speaker SRS XE-200.Don’t fall for the gimmick of speakers with more wattage. 1 watt means that speaker can produce maximum 87dB sound within 1 m distance. Whereas as a 20W speaker could produce only 97dB sound within 1 m distance. For comparison, train horns are blown at 90dB. Any sound above 90dB could cause earache and permanently damage hearing. Nobody plays songs and videos at that sound. As the distance increases beyond 1 m, loudness also decreases. So unless you are not looking for a party speaker or something for an outdoor gathering, a speaker below 10W is sufficient. I am NOT talking here about how loud a speaker can get. There is no point in getting a speaker that is just earblastingly loud but lacks any clarity of sound. So yeah. I am completely satisfied with this one. Try it; you too might be.

Value for money 👍
Here is my take on purchase. After using almost one week.@Sound quality very good. ( it has lower bass, that’s good for long marathon listeners)@Battery life 6-8 hrs ( around 70 % volume)It’s not loud but it has Sony vibe.. good music separation.Charging is awesome @ around 1.15 hrs full charge generally do from laptop.Even low volume sound is crisp and clear ( I’m not fan of loud upper bass)I have tested in both android and ios.In both works very well but for Apple well optimize.- can whenever you buy always check whose 3rd party supplier vendor (ratings)Definitely big 👍👌

Overall best speaker in price range. JBL fans stay away!!
I don't know why people compare it with jbl and other boom boom brands, this Sony speaker has a class of its own. Pair it with same model in stereo mode (left and right) and you get the best surround sound in a portable way.It has some unique sound signature and coz of that songs and podcasts sound so soothing, you surely would forget to stop listening.Previously I had srs xb13 and I upgraded to srs xb100 and it's totally worth it.Fast pair with ios and Android.Build is compact.Battery life goes for a long time when listening at moderate volume, as I said this speaker is not for boom boom fans. Everything is in moderation which gives crisp, clear and soothing sound. Don't get me wrong it has bass as well.

Absolutely amazing (Now with drawbacks)
The media could not be loaded. I initially bought one JBL charge 5. Costed Rs. 16.5K and had issues. When comparing the sound quality of JBL charge 5 to this Sony XB13, there's not much difference. Surely JBL charge 5 wins, but this one is pretty close, too. You can buy 4 of these instead of JBL Charge 5 and get way better sound. Although buying 2, 3 or 4 of these won't make sound stereo - instead 2, 3 or 4 monos.Compared to a basic home theatre though, surely even JBL charge 5 sounds like a muted one. This one can never come close to a home theatre unless you put this thing in a big box!Speaking of comparing this to home theatre, we should consider Hofmann's iron law. You can pick any two at a time: (1) Loudness (2) Bass (3) Size. So when size doesn't matter, you make box bigger, it gets louder and bassier. But this is small and half loud + half bass instead. In other words, the bass is sufficient, but the loudness isn't as loud as bass-less speakers (JBL for example)! But this gets significantly loud and quite Ok for most normal people.BTW, I was never a fan of Sony. Their sound quality is absolute crap. Their boxes and home theatres have high bass, high treble, muted 1KHz to 4KHz sound, high pitched high-frequency mids. I mean the EQ needs for most Sony speakers are terrible. But this speaker needs no EQ, luckily. The sound quality is absolutely amazing. Highs. mids and lows are very balanced.Oh, and when it comes to calling - yeah it's not actually bad. The mic it has doesn't sound like a pricey condenser microphone, but it's quite good for calling. You can put it on a table, and talk from 2 feet away.I also love that such a speaker is waterproof - I can enjoy songs and music in the bathroom! Noice!I will say this is the best speaker, even better than JBL Go 3 or Clip 4 (I assume) which even cost more! The downside is that it shakes the table it's on. In case you have sensitive electronics or other stuff, they might get rattled. Apart from that, I don't see much problems in this speaker so far.I've recorded a video on my phone to show you it's not bad. The problem is that my phone's mic isn't really that sophisticated, so it captured what it can capture...EDIT AFTER 2 WEEKS USAGEFrom 5 stars down to 3 stars. Reason:6. Can't Produce below 60 Hz: The speaker goes well above 60Hz to 20,000Hz. But it's bad that Sony false advertises it.5. 5 Watts Driver: The driver it contains isn't 13 watts. In fact, Sony never said anything about the wattage of the driver. It's the people who claimed the speaker to be 13 watts. It's just a 5 watts RMS driver.4. 1400mAh Battery: Battery is 1400mAh. Of course it makes sense the wattage is 5 watts. 13 watt driver would consume more than 2 amps of current. If you run this at fullest volume, it will still consume 1 amps of current, which means the 1.400Ah battery will be dead in less than 1 and half hours. Don't forget that bluetooth, status LEDs, and the inner circuitry also consume some power other than the woofer itself. It can never run 16 hours unless you just keep it on without listening or you listen at volume that's inaudible.3. Cheap Microswitches: The microswitches in the buttons are cheap - they can die if you use them a lot.2. Forget Repairing: Even though this has repairable parts, it's basically just glued together to get that IP67 rating. I have no regret for that now because you really get waterproof speaker. But if it's dead, it will be quite hard to repair.1. Bluetooth Issues: Biggest drawback is that the speaker GETS DISCONNECTED FROM YOUR DEVICE WHEN SOMEONE ELSE PAIRS TO IT. It's a complete shame that anyone can force you to disconnect from your device and connect to their own! You need to press the bluetooth button to disconnect. But someone might annoy you just like that.
