I would say the small portions would hold 1 cup and the larger maybe just a little less than 2 cups depending on the size of the cup. They aren't bad portion sizes especially when you count calories but the plates are a bit of a surprise when you first get them because they look like the size of a child's plate. I don't know if you can get the plates in different sizes or not but we are getting used to these plates now and they are very good quality. I hope this helps
