A Fun Addition to the Duniverse for All Committed Fans
This novel is the 20th additional volume added to the original 6 book Dune saga. I enjoyed it very much. It filled in a gap in the massive narrative and included some interesting background about Princess Royal Irulan—oldest child of the Emperor. It is also largely about the Fremen girl Chani whom becomes Paul’s mate. I don’t really care for the Chani character—at least not until she evolves much later in the overall saga. This book should be fun for anyone wanting to know more about the overall universe of Dune. As always, I recommend that you skip none of the books and read them all in order of publication. A pleasant easy read for all committed Dune fans.

The Saga Continues
This book covers the life of Princess Irulan and Chani of the Freman during the two years prior to the events in the original novel. An engaging and fast read.

Drivel
If the story had been about the two protagonists, and their differing ways of life then it would have been interesting. As it was, the storyline drifted off into some esoteric plot by a disenchanted Imperial Officer rallying similar characters like himself to rebel against the Emperor because the Emperor would not let him marry Irulan, on the periphery of which the planet’s Salusa Secundus and Dune are mentioned in passing as part of the subplot. On top of which we suddenly find Chani has a stepbrother, the Bene Tleilax are involved in another subplot on Dune to clone a Guild navigator, the Fremen are in the pay of the Spacing guild to find and destroy this Tleilaxu base, in which the step brother is killed. Plus Chani is involved in a subplot to kill the Padishah Emperor when he runs to Dune to hide from the fore mentioned Imperial uprising makes for a storyline so unconvincing it is ludicrous. If this is part of the Dune lore, set initially two years before the events in Dune, it’s a wonder the Imperium managed to find enough Sardaukar to fight off the uprising and supply the Harkonnens three legions to help destroy the Atreides. Absolute drivel like most of the Brian Herbert / Kevin Anderson spinoffs. Don’t buy it. Take it from me you will just be wasting your money!
