Our go to guide on vacation
We found a copy of this book at the family cabin we visit each summer. It quickly became our go-to guide for planning great hikes we could do in a day. After our last trip, I decided we needed one of our own at home so we could plan well in advance.Because we are lucky enough to have the use of a cabin in the eastern Sierra, we haven't made use of the information on lodgings. It seems to be the weaker portion of the book. I would feel the need to do an internet search to make sure I have really seen a good selection and found the best prices. It can't be beat for planning a hike, though. The author gives such a wealth of valuable details: you can really determine if a hike is going to be right for your fitness level, your preference of natural beauties, and the time of year at which you are hiking. We've never been disappointed.

Great book
This book was recommended by many folks on the eastern Sierra FB page. It is so hard to find a day hike book on the eastern Sierra. This one surpassed my expectations

It really works! It gets you going in the best possible way by acquainting you with an area with details. Only thing I like better in the original is the route map included.

the best day-hike guide book for Sierra Nevada
This is the best day hike guide book for Sierra Nevada so far. I actually bought two versions of this book

More maps! Less text!
It may be the best, if not the only, book of its kind when it comes to trails, but it does leave something to be desired when it comes to directions to trailheads and reviews of motels and hotels. If anything, the author has tried to do a bit too much; it would certainly be easier to carry a smaller/shorter book on a day hike. The selection of motels is also very subjective, and probably unnecessary; as the author herself points out, tripadvisor is probably a better resource for motels in towns. She might have simply limited her reviews to lodges and campsites near trailheads. I would have also preferred maps to trailheads, rather than written directions - and better maps of the trails themselves. Still, it was an invaluable resource for my trip to the eastern Sierras.

I have her first edition, 1996. We use it everytime we are in the Eastern Sierra's. We do a different trail, but have done some repeats with friends. Next we'll try the Bridgeport area.
