Great question! Scrubbing with salt and lemon is a simple and effective trick. Sprinkle coarse salt liberally over the board, then slice a lemon in half and use it to rub the salt into the board, squeezing juice onto the board as you go. You’ll be left with a great smelling board. The salt also acts as an abrasive to lift stains out (like beet juice) and can also kill bacteria in the process. Lastly, of course, give it a wash and pat it dry with a clean cloth towel then let the board air dry by standing it upright.

Also, a friendly reminder that wood cutting boards must be oiled every 3-4 weeks to ensure the wood does not dry out. I find 3 weeks to be a nice sweet spot. Food grade mineral oil and beeswax are great options.

What do you oil it with.

Accepted Answer

A food-grade mineral oil or food-grade beeswax. Do not use cooking oils such as olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, sesame oil, etc...  These types of oils are high in fat and once oxidized, can become rancid which can transfer an unpleasant smell into the wood.

Is this walnut board with compartments stained or is it natural wood?

We don't use any colors or stains on our board. The rich color you see in the grain is from the natural beauty of black walnut. We source sustainable black walnut and craft each piece right here in the USA with obsessive attention to detail. We apply multiple coats of food-grade mineral oil (which should be reapplied every 3 weeks) which not only protects the wood from drying out but also helps it keep its beautiful, lustrous appearance.

Question 4

How are the feet attached to the board and how does one remove them?

We don't have rubber feet for all designs but we do include them for our Alfred and Artisan board design. We drill small holes at each corner to fit our rubber feet. The feet and holes are sized perfectly to allow for a very snug fit. They are removable, however, we recommend leaving them on in order to enjoy the non-slip feature. The rubber feet do three things; absorb shocks when chopping, keeps the board stable during use and creates space for air circulation which will keep the underside dry. Appreciate your interest!
