This Photoolex WFC-05 (2 transceiver version) arrived for review presentable boxed and in the package you get 2 WFC-05 Wireless Flash Transceivers a manual, stands, a review card and details of the 12 month warranty. For the avoidance of doubt this model works only with the Canon models detailed on this page - we initially tried the units with a Nikon D7100 but it was not supported and we had to go to a friend's and test them with her Canon 60D..Unlike some sets which feature a trigger and receiver unit this one features two transceivers. One transceiver attaches to your camera via its hot shoe and can support a flashgun on its own horseshoe plus it also triggers the second transceiver on which you can mount a further, remote flash. The units use the 2.4Ghz frequency with a range of up to 100m. Power comes from two AA cells (not supplied) in each of the units, the manual confirms the triggers will also work from 1.2V AA rechargeable cells which we used for testing. The supplied stands for the transceivers helpfully also feature standard tripod mounts. You can daisy chain a series of these transceivers together and there are three separate frequencies so you can group flashes too. There's support for ETTL, manual and multi flash modes up to a maximum synch speed of 1/8000 but this maxima depends on the combinations of cameras/flash guns you are using. The transceiver units have their own built in AF assist emitters. The controls on the transceivers are intuitive and include a channel/group indicators, channel/group setting buttons, a test button, state indicator, on/off switch and a PC port. The physical quality of construction including the hotshoes seems fine for the price point. We tested this set using the Canon 60D, a Canon Speedlight Flashgun and a Photoolex Flash Gun. Setup is easy and the transceivers connected with each other without difficulty and synched with the camera well. Range seems extremely good even indoors with interference and obstructions and the flashes seem to fire in perfect synchronisation. The TTL settings seemed to work well as did manual setting. For the money these transceivers seem physically well made and deliver good performance and plenty of features, plus, you can add further units at a later date. Because of these attributes it's a pity there isn't a Nikon compatible version as yet. I'm not saying these are pro quality triggers but for a new/amateur photographer on a budget they represent a good price/performance ratio and I'd recommend them for those groups.(Disclosure: I was supplied with a heavily discounted review sample - the text above reflects our honest opinion of the flash triggers).
