Aside from those details, the piece inspires me (despite its rather idealistic and romantic styling) as I consider its implications and considerations of the bondage of Christ in his humanity, and likewise the bondage of his parents (Jospeh, of course, is rightly not "in the picture," since he would have almost certainly passed away by this time in Jesus' maturity), set against the freedom of redemption which was to be completed by the Christ on the cross as a propitiatory and expiative substitutionary atonement. A powerful painting, in my opinion, and I am glad to have it hanging in my office.
