Oh, the humanity
These people are not just statistics, but 555 pages of 1,910 real living humans, like you and I, who in their wildest thoughts never imagined they would not go home that night. They are the ordinary stuff of life, the non-combatants in what we watch nearly every evening, where the same people meet the same end. You may have to check the used books markets for this volume, which I highly recommend.

Stunning, sad, no words
This is a stunning collection by the New York Times that puts a face to the often-nameless 3,000 or so who died during the worst ever act of murder on US soil. The bios are too-brief and leave you wanting to know more about these unfortunate souls -- but that's the point: it's impossible to sum up the life of a human being and thus impossible to fully calculate and comprehend how the losses must have affect the families, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances of the deceased. The New York Times is to be commended for doing its part to show just a slice of who the 9/11 victims were, to make sure they are remembered as real people who led real lives and not just statistical victims.

Brings the buildings into focus of 9-11
Book was one I wanted for a long time. One friend was in the Pentagon when it was hit (he was OK) and one's grandaughter was killed on flight 93. Neither of these were included in this book so this was to change to my point of view. Good history review.

which is not easy reading, is a historical book that will perpetuate ...
Although it is an In Memoriam book of all those who perished in the attack on the Twin Towers (9/11), which is not easy reading, is a historical book that will perpetuate the memory of the deceased, and rightly so. Sad, but very necessary to document history as it happened on that disgraceful day.

Important Reminder
A reminder of who was lost on September 11, 2001. It provides names, faces, and a bit of each person's story. Real people died that day. It's important to remember who they were. This helps.

Powerful and beautiful, but why not all?
I've been overpowered by the beautifully written NY Times series of portraits of 9/11 victims, so I've hoped mightily that the portraits would be collected in book form for remembrance and posterity. What stunned me when I received the book last night is that the Times appears to have rushed a book to print with only those portraits published through 2/3/02 - a fact not indicated anywhere on the cover or in the title, or (based on a quick skim) in the introductory text. The Times web site states that only IF the book goes to a second printing will portraits after 2/3 be included. What was the rush??? It seems to me that the Times should have made it clearer that these were selected portraits, or better, included ALL the persons covered in the series - and if that delayed publication a few more months, even in September, all the better and more fitting. That is my sole, though major, complaint about this book. Otherwise, the portraits continue to be powerful and beautifully written remembrances of the innocent victims of dastardly, cowardly, immoral, and evil acts.

love, sadness
This is a book that will give you every feeling imaginable. It's a book filled with memories, love, sadness, anger, worry, horror, joy, laughter and hope. The only thing that's missing is the portraits of the remaining victims that were not available at the time of publishing. I have read cover to cover and will continue to pick up and remind myself of all those souls lost that day.
