LG phones often play it safe, but this modular G5, which lets you swap out some parts, is all risk. I love the innovation -- no other company has gotten this far with a modular phone -- but unfortunately the device falls short on execution. Swapping out parts means you turn off your smartphone each time, and there just aren't enough modules right now to make this truly captivating. (LG is selling two components, but they don't pique my interest all that much.) Maybe if there were more inspired modules, and more partners on board lining up cooler add-ons -- I love the idea of a swappable camera lens, for example -- I could be more excited about the G5, or at least more forgiving of its growing pains. But it's not all bad news. Forget the modules and the device is the best handset with a removable battery, which is becoming a rarity in the phone world. Its aluminum build looks and feels great, and the two cameras on its back are a pleasure to use. Overall, the G5 still isn't as good as Samsung's Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge when it comes to processing speed and battery life, but it'll work very well for all the things you really need to do: take photos, browse the internet, and watch videos throughout the day. (For more on the G5's hardware specs and how it compares to other flagship handsets, scroll to the end of the review.) 19 LG's elegant and unorthodox G5 (pictures) Design: This is not your modular fantasy When LG first showed off the G5, it made a big deal of it being the first phone with modular capabilities. This ability to swap out and customize certain hardware parts has been a longtime fantasy for mobile users. Like building a personal computer, you can upgrade certain components that are important to you or fit a certain need. If you're going somewhere where you're going to take a variety of photos, for example, you might want to swap out your handset's stock lens for a fisheye or macro lens.

Top Choice for Replaceable Battery
The battery in my HTC 10 died after only a year, so I did some research to find a comparable phone with a replaceable battery. The LG G5 seemed the best of what's out there. Now that I've used it a few weeks, here's my assessment.CONS: Since the LG calendar cannot be disabled, I get double notifications for appointments — annoying but not major. (Note: I subsequently discovered that I could disable notifications in the LG calendar, which has stopped the double notifications.) The default appearance of the screen icons and folders was less pleasing to me than my HTC, but I found a free LG theme that I could live with. I discovered that, since this is a Canadian model, I was unable to download any of the paid LG themes. Instead I got a notification that I'm in the wrong country to buy that theme. For users who don't care much about the look, this restriction won't be a concern. If it is, you can always install a customizable launcher (I finally installed the Action Launcher). Battery life is average — OK with normal use; weak if you spend a lot of time listening to music or watching videos. In addition, the charging speed is slow for a quick-charge phone. One minor item I had to get used to was the on-off button on the back — not my favorite location, but I quickly adjusted to it. That about covers the downsides.PROS: Like the HTC, the main body is metal, not plastic, a big plus for me. Though the G5's manufacturing process results in a look and feel that is less classy, it is still solid. An important feature for me was the size — about the same as my HTC10, and one of the few phones with a replaceable battery that's not too big for a medium-to-small hand (or for those who like to drop their phone in a shirt pocket). The camera is excellent; even the selfie camera is good. The sound though not great is decent. I suspect it's fine with headphones. The screen resolution is clear and sharp. In my view, this phone's biggest assets are its replaceable battery and the price. For a brand new, flagship-level phone of fairly recent vintage, the price is simply outstanding. Perhaps the steep depreciation occurred because of the unsuccessful push of the G5's modular nature. The add-on modules just never caught on. However, since I could care less about the modules, I'm just happy to have a solid, right-sized phone with good specs that has a replaceable battery.

Who Needs the Most Current LG to be Uber Happy?
I bought my wife one of these in Feb 2017 for $450 or so (an H820--ATT). She liked it so much we bought TWO of them here for a shade under $400. Our H831 models were actually originally for the Canadian market with T-Mobile, but came unlocked and useful for our ATT pre-paid plan--but with some manual Network settings required which I copied from my wife's H820 (you might need to call your carrier's support line for that). AND, unlike my wife's H820, these updated quickly to Android 8.0 within a week; making my wife jealous or us, but what can you do? Overall, the phone is great, cameras very nice, battery life good but not fantastic (of course it depends on what you do with your phone--you can't drive it like a sports car and expect low gas mileage). Would I buy more if I needed to? Sure thing.

Reliable, functional, and fun
Great product. I tend to be frugal when it comes to mobile devices, so I was looking for a slightly older model of smartphone so that I wouldn't have to take out a line of credit to afford it. I upgraded to this from the LG G2, which i liked very much and found very reliable. This device has been great so far: battery life is significantly shorter than my last model (around 3 days or so), but charges very rapidly; it does have a lot more memory and oomph in its processor, so media streaming is great. This particular seller sent me a Canadian model, and I am in the US: this actually resulted in a much easier time configuring settings, however I did have to manually set up the APN in order to be able to access my provider's LTE network. Within 2 weeks of purchasing, i had received 2 OS upgrades (shipped with Android 6 and I'm currently at 8), so this phone was a fantastic compromise in terms of having an older model that is up-to-date in terms of functionality.Beware however, this particular model from LG has a known bug which can cause an infinite bootloop after an update. I had purchased this once before from another vendor and had to return it within a week. My current device has not experienced this issue, so from what I have researched it is hit or miss.

Rip off phone!!!
I purchased this LG G5 H831 4G LTE phone in Oct 2020. Was mostly happy with this phone and the reviews. Reviews don't mean much if your current cell phone provider Consumer Cellular feels your phone is out of date 20 months later. Consumer Cellular sells phones that are 4G LTE as this claims to be in the Amazon invoice. There seems to be an electronic glitch here that just keeps on giving. This experience tells me no more purchases from Amazon of electronic products which have been gathering dust in their warehouses. There are some type of products buyer beware with Amazon. Electronics for sure! Never again!!!👎

READ IF YOU'RE HAVING DATA TROUBLE!
5 stars for an awesome, fast and reliable phone with fantastic camera.1 hiccup was getting the texting and mobile data to work after getting a SIM thrown in it. I was told this is NOT a GSM only device and that it can work with a CDMA carrier as well but since my device was apparently an international version (works anywhere) there is no Access Point APN settings established. As long as you bring this up to the guys in the store you won't have to make a 2nd trip like I did.PS how is a phone this good less than 200 bucks? It's a high end device and still very relevant in 2018.

Great all around phone - Plus HDMI output capability
It did come in a sealed box and it was unlocked...I'm not sure how they did that. I bought it for the USB-C to HDMI capability to stream Netflix, etc or play video games on my HDTV, works great if you get the right adapter that allows for the HDMI, usb (for keyboard/mouse), and charging port. The one I got was here on amazon, I'll add the link below. Be warned that the phone to HDTV link up is not always plug and play. Many times I've had to disconnect and reconnect the various components to get them to recognize and sync to each other. Not sure if this is a phone or the cheap adapter. So if you're will to play with it a bit it works awesome when it does work.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DL29W4X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Great flagship in its heyday; still solid in 2020
I bought this LG for use as a cheap media device, as well as an emergency backup phone. For the same price as a current budget phone, you get a quad HD display, 4 GB of RAM, and a premium metal design. The battery lasts a long time on standby, but drains rapidly with wi-fi turned on; this is expected for a 3-year-old device (although the battery in the G5 is user-replaceable). The LG G5 H831 comes factory unlocked and works exactly as advertised; I tested mine with two different SIM cards (Rogers and Telus), and the phone successfully recognized and connected to both networks. However, I can only speak for calls and texts; I haven't tested more advanced features like wi-fi calling or voice over LTE, since I don't plan to use mine as a phone on a daily basis (only for backup). One thing to be aware of: if you insert a new SIM card while the G5 is powered on, the phone will reboot for security, and your home screen app layout will be reset, but you'll still keep all your apps and settings. This is much less bothersome than what Samsung does (inserting SIM initiates a full factory reset), but if you've already organized your apps into folders, it can be annoying to have all your work undone. So power off the phone before switching SIMs, and if you're setting yours up for the first time, preferably insert the SIM before you begin.
