Q: Which of the toner cartridges does it use?

It uses an HP 83A toner cartridge.

Q: Does it come with a starter toner cartridge?

Follow the install instructions and they will guide you to removing the cartridge and shipping piece for the cartridge. When the cartridge is out of the printer you have to remove the tape that protects the cartridge toner from leaking out during shipment

Q: It seems to suggest that you need to print "500 pages" a month. If I am a light user.. maybe 50 pages a month, does it matter?

I don't print anywhere near 500 pages in a month either and I have had no problems with this printer. I'm probably averaging a page or two a day-ish. I think the only problem we're likely to have is we may not get the whole 1500 page capacity from the toner cartridge - they may have a time limit also. I know a previous laser printer I owned would quit printing from lack of use occasionally. I could usually recover it by shaking the toner cartridge. I've had this printer for a few months now with no hint of this sort of problem... I think you'll be fine.
