Can this withstand the weight of cloth?

Yes, it can handle sheets. However, the connections occasionally come apart. I have a 4YO and when he plays with it, about every 20-30 minutes he brings me a bar and as I put it back in there's usually 2-3 other connections I have to fix too. I don't know if I'm just not getting them in all the way or if they will just come out over time. It's not always the same connections so I'm guessing that they'll just come out over time. He still loves it and I have a hard time getting him to come out for anything else.

How long are the poles?

Roughly 18". I gave this to my grandkids so I don't know for sure. However, I wouldn't purchase again. The poles come apart from the connectors easily. The kit didn't make a very big structure. My 3 & 4 year old grandkids were nearly too big to use it and it was flimsy when put together. Nice idea that needs some work.
