This blade will cut slate with no issues, provided you don't let the blade overheat. I.e. pour cold water occasionally to keep it cool; cut small sections at a time. Guessing you will be cutting long, thick sections of slate.

what is the copper washer/shim which comes with the blade for ?

The washer is used if you have a smaller arbor on the grinder.
