This is my second reading of this book, and I may well read it again in another year. Well written by one that is entirely familiar with the subject. Not a first hand account of some incidents or injustices, but a thorough and well researched history of the subject that goes back to beginnings of islamic intolerance of others in their sphere, which is to say...since islam's inception; and then while it's sphere grew through conquest, and more non muslims fell under it's tyrannical dominance. Not diluted, or exaggerated, but told accurately [well documented,with sources noted] and sure to leave the reader knowing exactly how islam has in the past treated non muslims, and by inference what it intends for the infidel in the future if islam holds sway. This is not a casual read, but a serious one about A very frightening prospect that needs finally to be understood. Any negative comments on this work will only come from islamists in denials, or their apologists. Bat Ye'Or...BRAVO

The history that very few know. This book is so well researched that no one can argue with the history of the book. Do you know that after the Muslims took over the ME and most of Europe, that Christianity was almost totally eradicated? This book records the process and gives great details of the event of the barbarians (Muslims) that came out of Saudi Arabia and destroyed an enlightened Judeo Christian civilization that surrounded the Mediterranean.This book will enlighten you as to how the Crusades were a weak response to hundreds of years of rape, murder, and destruction by Arab Muslims.

Never had heard the word "Dhimmi" until a few weeks before I bought this book. Totally shocking to me at the time, as I was not well read on Eastern Civilization. In today's P.C. world, we Westerners just aren't told about the horrors, subjugations, and lack of civil rights of certain groups of people in the muslim world. Certain groups of people means 1) Christians, 2) Jews, 3) Women, 4) and the all-encompassing title: "Unbelievers." A shocking wake up for anyone not familiar with what goes on in muslim countries.

I have looked long and hard to find historical information on Islam that hasn't been bent, twisted, and corrupted so as not to offend Muslims. The truth is what I want not a wishful fairy tail and Bat Ye'or delivers big time - objective facts and data period.

I have started reading in it, and it is indeed a look into a culture whose past seems much less "available" than the Western one, when it comes tomthe dark sides. Dhimmitude is a large unknown by and large it seems, but a very important part to know about.

Read this book and you'll learn why you don't want to live as anything other than a muslim under islamic rule.

Great book, full of thorough scholarship. Bat Ye'or followed this book with a series of great and timely scholarly pieces on the interaction between the Mohammedan and non-Mohammedan world. A great knowledge base on the subject, either stand-alone or as a precursor to further study.

This is an excellent book. It provides a good basic history of the dhimmi status that non-Muslim people lived under in Muslim governed countries. Given the upheaval taking place in Syria and Iraq today this book should be read by anyone who wants to understand how life may be under Muslim rule in conquered countries.
