Laser Worked But Need Adjustment
The laser fixed my PS2 problem. However, the laser pot settings were wrong so when I first fired up my PS2 after replacing the laser it didn't work. I used a digital meter to verify the resistance on both the CD and DVD pots and it appears whoever adjusted them reversed the settings…the CD was set around 850 ohms and the DVD at 1220 ohms. I calibrated them and turned on the PS2 again…it worked perfectly. So, be aware that you may have to adjust the laser resistance yourself.

Shipped promptly and easy to install
I've never done anything like this before. I'm 33 years old and have never soldered or desoldered a joint or component before. However, I am a big DIY guy. I always figure that it is cheaper, or if not, the same price to do it yourself and you get a tool and some knowledge out of the escapade. I went out and bought a soldering iron (Weller at HD for $17) and a solder sucker ($10 at Fry's).The soldering iron I bought came with four different tips. I used the fine-point tip for the laser solder point. Since I don't have a small vice or small hobby clamp or anything, I found it easier to mount the laser then desolder the point. I had the soldering iron in one hand and the solder sucker in the other. As soon as the solder turned liquid...pop!....sucked it right up. I put the PS2 back together and, to my surprise, it worked right away.So less than $40 fixed my PS2 like new. The only thing I thought was weird is that the motor is now noisy. You can hear it pretty loud when it moves the laser. The only thing I can think I did wrong was over-tighten something. I am used to fixing my car and truck in which parts fit tough and tight whereas electronics fit smooth and snug. If anybody knows why the motor got loud, please let me know.

Messy application of the solder blob mens extra prep work and testing.
The solder blob may not come off cleanly even with a good soldering station. When I installed the laser, it would not read discs at all. I removed it from the PS2 and inspected the solder points under a high-power magnifier, and found that there was flux and a tiny bit of solder still bridging the points. It took additional attempts with solder wick as well as gently cleaning the gaps between the three solder pads with the tip of an X-acto knife and with the tip of the soldering iron to completely clear them. This usually happens if there's too much flux left during manufacturing - the solder follows the remaining flux and spreads out instead of neatly wicking away. Under a magnifier, the solder pads are closer together than on the old one, which adds to the problem. Units that seem DOA may just need additional clean-up after de-soldering.With the solder pads were properly cleaned up, it appears to work fine. Just be aware that what should be a quick, simple de-solder job can turn into more troubleshooting than expected.

quick and painless fix
Melted my old laser by letting the drive spin up all night by mistake. You may think the drive itself is broken because it won't spin up at all, but it's more likely that the laser just can't detect that a disc is inserted in the first place. This laser doesn't come with any documentation or anything, but you can find walkthroughs on the web or videos on YouTube. As others have said, you definitely need to desolder the blob on the left side for the unit to work. You can see what this means by looking at the old laser; basically, just flatten it out with a soldering iron (15 watt should do the trick) and do your best to clear off as much excess solder as possible. A desoldering braid would help, but it's not really necessary. The piece with the solder blob on it will most likely want to pull off the unit when you do this, but don't let it -- keep it flush to the metal behind it or it won't work. There are better replacements out there that come with the whole laser tray, but this is a great buy if you aren't willing to put much money into fixing an antiquated system.

PS2 Slim Lens
Bought this to replace a dead lens on my PS2 Slim... At first this replacement looked the same as the original. When installed correctly it solved all my disc read errors and I was able to play long sessions again. But the lens died in 2-3 months with spare use. After that I learned that some lenses are made in china, look like the original, work like the original (at first) but work for 3 months at the most. This seems to be one of those lenses.

No problem, except....
Put the laser in and it did not work right. I then found out online, that you have to desolder a tiny little connection for it to work. Nothing about that in the instructions with the laser, just happen to luck on to it. This should be explained with the unit.
