The diameter is 1.57in, the height is 3.35in.

Q: Although I suppose the water level should never get higher than the Valve can it be tightened to be water tight against the container it is installed?

The water level in our usage of this float valve covers the device. The float sits on the water (level) and is how the valve itself is actuated. Consequently, I would not "suppose". The valve can definitely be tightened to a water-tight seal (on a flat surface). Please note that the threads for the valve are a 1/2" straight thread. The thread is not a tapered pipe thread.

Q: Are the various plastic parts uv stable or will they break down after a year or two if in the sun (like pvc)? wondering if i should get a brass one?

Brass float valves would make sense if you can find them. However the plastic ones are what I've been using for a number of years now and they are relatively inexpensive to replace. So for me, it makes better sense to just replace them as they accumulate calcium deposits and start to break down. They should last for a longer time if you take steps to clean them periodically and for sure after each year's use. Good luck with finding brass ones if that is the way you proceed. Bill Milow.
