The The Body Book: Easy-to-Make Hands-on Models That Teach

One of THE BEST biology products for hands on learning
I love this book so much. I needed a book to supplement biology curriculum. When I found this book I thought it may be a good fit as it seemed to have hands on components as students are to assemble the pieces by cutting and gluing/ taping. Then coloring, and then there’s an interactive end result of a finished organ system or body system. This company out does itself as far as creating an innovative product for learning about biology that provides hands on experiences. Much of learning products now are online based, or have long text. This product did not have that. It is super easy to use, easy to teach from, and has little informational and helpful blurbs before each section of cut out activities. It is structured as follows: blurb on topic, pages of templates to cut out, then assemble the pieces, and you have an interactive tool to use in learning. Another fun add on activity is to have students color in the pieces differently based on your focus of study. Then, students can also label the piece at the end, either by cutting out the words too when cutting out the templates, or creating your own labels by writing the words on paper and then cutting them each out. This way, there’s a labeled piece.I cannot express how happy I am to find hands on learning resources such as this. They are few and far to come by and way too expensive typically for an educator to afford. However, this book provides invaluable resources for topics in biology involving the human body system. I used it in a secondary level but it could even be used at the primary and middle school level with some modifications. One thing I do want to note, although I do not know if it is just something students need to adjust to doing or if there’s a easy fix… however, after completing 2-3 of these projects, I had some students very tired of cutting the precise templates out , especially the smaller parts. I ended up needing to help various students cut different parts at times. I don’t know if I would change this book at all as it largely depends on the students functioning and academic levels. However, I do recommend making a lower adapted level version of this book for other students and learners. Perhaps make a version with less intense cutting. For instance, less tight spaces to cut, less angled cuts. And no inner cutting out pieces. I feel that would help adapt to all learners and make this product even more versatile so teachers can differentiate to all levels of learning.

great purchase for my 3rd grade classroom
I've bought several copies of this over the years for my own children and for my students. It can be used in so many ways and for the low cost of copies, students can put together a very nice skeleton. The illustrations are clear and easy to understand.

Great book - get the ebook to print from to make your life easy!
Great book - I love the flexibility of the content. I love that it builds a whole body by the end of it. It's got lots of fun extension activities. I'm using this with my 7 and 10 year olds for homeschool science. However, I definitely recommend buying the ebook pdf from Scholastic to go along with this, for ease of printing. The hardcopy book is setup for photocopying so you can't just cut everything out, its all double-sided so it would wreck the project if you did that. So I use the physical book as my teaching material/reference and print from the ebook. Works great!

Good but not great
The concept is wonderful, but the execution leaves much to be desired. In order to use the models you have to photocopy each page as they are printed back to back. This proves to be very difficult to do successfully without tearing the book apart. If a digital version ever becomes available I will purchase but this one is going back. Too much work to use it.
