Terrific Suspenseful Film
Initially I wanted to view this because I'm a Daniel Craig fan. After seeing him play 007 in the James Bond films I knew they made they right choice to play the super spy. Well I was more than pleasantly surprised as I was completely taken in by Rooney Mara who plays Lisbeth Salender more than Craig, who plays the disgraced journalist and publisher Mikael Blomkvist. I streamed this online and at first I was put off by Lisbeth's appearance; the tattoos, piercings and freaky looks. However as the movie progressed we see there is more to her than meets the eye. Although troubled she is highly intelligent and resourceful. Later I found that this was a remake so I decided to give the original a chance. In my opinion Rooney Mara played the role much better than Noomi Rapace in the original 2009 version. Rooney was darker, more withdrawn and yet quite capable of taking care of herself. How much did I like this film? So much so that I watched it nine times before I decided to purchase the video. Sooner or later it wasn't going to available to stream so now I can watch it whenever I want. I am now, also, a fan of Rooney Mara and on a mission to see her films.

Foreign VS. American version
Big fan the entire franchise. I've NOT seen this American version with Daniel Craig until after I saw ALL the foreign installments this series in franchise "Dragon Tattoo" movies.THIS movie is based upon movie #1 of 4 the foreign franchise only, the original "Girl with Dragon Tattoo". It nearly parallels the foreign version scene for scene, a fact I was equally disappointed & satisfied by. You're NOT going to gather much from one version versus the other unless you are foreign film challenged. This version IS perhaps bit more 'polished', it somehow runs smoother in narrative...the "Hollywood' touch I suppose. I would say that it is in THIS case a rare positive.HOWEVER...There DID exist what seemed subtle but are in reality DRAMATIC departures the foreign narrative! IF I was taking this as ONE OFF movie it would be fine, but this is part what already existed a 3 (and now 4) part series franchise, foreign movies!UNDERSTAND THIS...without giving too much away, the departure this version took from original foreign version in a SUBSTANTIVE WAY is unrepairable . IF you were to then go watch movies 2-4 foreign versions you would be confused because the changes in 'this' version contradict those 'enough' to create conflict. They stuck SO close the original #1 foreign movie with this production, I'm not sure why it was decided to change slight BUT 'substantive' narrative the storyline so as to NOT be able MESH with remainder foreign films #2-4?IF you've already seen all the Swedish versions then I strongly recommend watching this!IF you have NOT seem any the original foreign versions this franchise, movies #1-4, then I would strongly recommend watching those FIRST and then viewing this version with Daniel Craig. Unfortunately they created too much conflict in the facts/narrative/story to 100% understand it 'together' without having seen foreign versions FIRST!

Swedes behaving badly
Tales of detectives/investigators trying to solve a mystery against the backdrop of a wealthy toxic family tableau is a long established dramatic sub-genre of books and movies. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is sadly cursed by the release of Knives Out which set the bar up at unreachable levels.Tales of this kind vary on their choice of protagonist. Often it's the detective. Often it's the "nice" family member. In TGwtDT, it's the eponymous researcher, a troubled survivor of an abusive family history that has left her guarded, wary and remarkably cunning.TGwtDT blends police procedural with the Girl's character study. Both are compelling, tho the investigation takes some turns into the illogical and eventually into the idiotic, and the character study suggests we're better off embracing our self imposed isolation. As I have often observed, they don't call them comfort zones for nothing.Much is made of casting shade on the Swedish reputation for staid propriety. This story suggests they are every bit as bigoted, vengeful, mean spirited, perverse and twisted as all Homo Sapiens.I can't definitively say whether the Swedish or the US versions are better. They handle some plot turns very differently, but all are defensible.Go for the meatballs. Stay for the flambé.
