Q: Where can I get a longer hose and other attachments?

Regarding attachments, I’ve gotten them from Amazon and/or Makita dealers I’ve found that longer flexible hoses are counterproductive; they use up the suction power (which is greatest at the vacuum unit) in the greater friction from the ridged interior of the hose. The longer the hose, the greater the friction loss of vacuum. Because of this, manufacturers usually offer strai, smooth extension tubes which have less vacuum friction loss. Studies using Applied Flow Technology software confirm this.

Q: How does the suction and usability compare to the hand held vacuum?

Excellent suction. However, Makita, in their infinite wisdom, made the 1.5in/38mm nozzle a little smaller (37mm) than industry standard so as to not fit any other manufacturers' industry-standard 1.5in attachments. Makita also doesn't include a round brush nozzle, which is always super handy especially with portable shopvacs (nor do those geniuses even offer a "1.5in/38mm" brush nozzle attachment). It would've been a 5-star product otherwise.

Q: I need something cordless to get the small amount of water the bilge pump won't remove out of my boat. Would this be a viable product?

I believe so, please remember to remove the dust filters. Other than that yes.
