Don't Think of This as a Point and Shoot Camera....uhhhh, Book
Can't say enough about David Busch and his camera books. I bought the G16 as my new "walk around" camera (getting tired of dragging along my Canon 40D with several lenses while on hikes and cruises), and it's a godsend. This little camera has as many features as my larger format DSLR (yes, it really does) and the quality of photos is excellent. I can't tell the difference, even when blowing them up on a large computer screen. This book by David Busch unlocks all the secrets of the G16. Much of this camera's "horsepower" is contained within various menu settings, which I had not discovered by just trial and error, until I began reading this book. Busch's writing style is clear and concise, and he and the editors have made excellent use of color photo illustrations throughout. Not only will a photo show you what a menu setting will look like, but he'll also show you how different settings affect the final photo. There are many examples like that which make this book a "must have" for me. I take it along on all our long trips now, and learn something new every trip.UPDATE: Have now shot day and night scenes (with excellent guidance in the book), fireworks at night, "macro" closeups of flowers and insects...all the things that my big DSLR camera can do (providing you change a few lenses). But with the author's guidance, all of these challenging shots are clearly within the capability of this camera. I would never have discovered all this without the guidance contained within the book.Highly recommended.

Must have book
The manual for Canon Power Shot G16 that I downloaded was Ok but not all that helpful. This is. It really helped me to get the most out of the G16. The one thing I wanted to get out of this camera was to be able to use the zone technique for contrast control as I did with my film cameras. I also bought the Kindle version for my AT hike which was great on the trail. I now use the digital version more than the book because of the lookup features. You will also get lessons on how to take better photos and videos. You can not go wrong getting this book.

Has the info you need for the G16 but at a big price.
I am an experienced photographer with multiple Canon cameras. After buying the G16, which is a very good camera, I spent weeks going through the manual to figure out all of its features. Unfortunately, the manual is not supplied on paper and must be downloaded. Bad apple Canon! The manual is complicated just like the camera and DOES NOT have all of the information that you would expect it to. Certain features, like the different video image stabilization settings, just aren't explained. This book provides the additional info that you need. Canon obviously supplied the author with material that isn't available anywhere else. Trust me, I've scoured the internet looking. Again, bad apple Canon! This book is organized pretty well but if you are an experience photographer, you'll have to wade through some basic stuff on picture taking to get what you're looking for. Still, it's worth buying. The only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars was the price. Much of it's contents should have been free with the camera. It's one of the most expensive books I've purchased in a long time.

The book is great, the camera not so much.
I really like Mr. Busch's guide for the Canon Power Shot. It is full of useful information. To be honest, my experience with the camera is not good. It is an impressive device that manages to be out of focus most of the time. Trying to get the right elements in the Auto Focus and Auto Exposure is an arcane art that fails too often. So I ran out for Bush's book. The book helps a lot. At least now I can get some acceptable images.

David's books are always superior to the respective owners manuals
David's books are always superior to the respective owners manuals. So I give it 5 stars. However, I give Amazon zero stars. Here's why. The ebook is only available in Kindle, which sucks compared to Adobe Reader PDF. The current PC Kindle app doesn't recognize page numbers. Try navigating in that. Impossible. I see what I want in the index; but don't have a page to go to or a click option.Simple solution, Amazon, is make your ebooks available in PDF. Stop trying to control the world by being so proprietary. Not to mention selling a lot more of David's or anyone else's publications and consequently being kind to the authors as well as your customers.

Pretty good for camera, less so on photography basics
Pretty good at covering the camera itself but I felt like I could use more on the basics of exposure and other topics. There is much better information on the internet about these topics. I wish they were covered in a better, more logical way in this book. Some things are a little dated like the mention that some of the controls are "VCR" like

Very useful reference
Although I have over 50 years of experience with cameras, including professional models, I thought a good book would help me get the most from this highly advanced point-and-shoot camera. David Busch's guide is very well written and organized, with plenty of color illustrations. Because the PowerShot 16 is not my main camera, there are some features that I haven't used and others that I am not very familiar with and forget how to use. Therefore, I have found this book to be a very handy reference and I check it frequently.

Such a great book!
Really nice, high quality paperback with lots of photos and diagrams - It can be for the beginner (like me) or for the more advanced photographer (like I hope to soon be). I needed to learn about f stops, ISO's, white balance, etc. and this shows how with the controls and menus of the G16 specifically. I would buy this to use as your main instruction manual, period. I purchased this directly from the author, he autographed it for me inside the front cover with some encouraging words - seems like a really cool guy who's genuinely interested in teaching people photography at the level in which they are most comfortable.

Very friendly learning process
An excellent user oriented guide to start one using the G16 - an extremely complex computer on board a very compact camera. The first few chapters are very readable, but stretch the user's knowledge of what can be done. The latter chapters (which I have not got to in detail yet!) spell out in more detail how to achieve the desired result. The book is written very much in the style of a personal chat. This does not displace the Canon User Guide, which is a much more condensed feature by feature manual, but without starting with the question "How do I ...... ?" So as one learns the capabilities of the camera, but still needs the detail procedure in each case, the Canon manual remains useful and can be carried about on a memory stick.

Good camera book. Only just started reading it last week. Much better book than the last Canon Camera book I bought. Good quality and easy to read. It will be very useful.

Very useful for finding out HOW to make the most of the G16's many features. The 214 page camera manual just tells you what they are, albeit in great detail.Rather a large book, and not one to carry around with you.
