Does this shut of on its own when the level is low?

Yes it does shut off when there is not enough water.

Could you put this in the bottom of a 5 Gallon Paint Bucket to make it a humidifier or will the module be ineffective at that depth?

1. Device won't provide vapor effect at all at the depth of a full 5 gallon bucket. Water level above level sensor is optimal at ~2inches for full effect. 2. Unit provides dense "cold" (heavy) vapor and likely won't serve well as a humidifier.

Can you use this with punch? And drink out of it?

For the price, this should be a great add to your halloween party. I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to use it withta normal punch bowl. Anything over 8 inches deep will lower the amount of "fog" created. Ive used these in gallon ice cream buckets a few times with no issues.
