As the name implies, this book is very complete and detailed. This books lists 6 breed groups: The sporting group; The hound group; the working group; the terrier group; The toy group; the non-sporting group; and last The Herding Group.Then for each group, this book offers a break-down of the different breeds within this group. The headlines include; History of the breed, form and function, Living with the breed and what to expect, and competition information.Official standard for the breed which includes; General appearance, Head, color, and etc.Some even list the faults of the breed.

The book is excellent. It is great in that there are color pictures after years of only black and white pictures. The layouts of the breed groups is very nicely done. This is the best book that is published that covers all of the dog breeds with lots of information about each one. The book arrived in excellent condition. Contary to other reviews that claimed that the book falls apart, I find that the book was made very well. Amazon packaged the book very well for shipping.

This book contains great information about every breed recognised by the AKC. It has complete breed standards, the intended function of the breed, information on living with the breed, basically everything you would want to know. Much of the information about the dogs comes from the individual breed clubs and owners so you can be sure that this information is coming from experts who live with these dogsFull disclosure: my wife and I are contributors to this edition (21st edition). Wow. I have owned almost every edition of the AKC guide for the last thirty years and this one is incredible. Unlike previous editions, this one features plenty of gorgeous photographs of dogs doing all sorts of activities, in addition to the usual conformation photograph. There is a ton of information and the book is fun to read. The only downside is that the book is huge. If you are a dog lover, you will really enjoy this book.

A.K.C. now has so many breeds of dogs that this book is very heavy. The descriptions of the breeds is great. Guess they couldn't make it lighter. It would be difficult for a novice person to take it to a dog show as a reference for the breed they are looking at. It will be my coffee table book.

I'd read many reviews that the binding was bad. AKC had even pulled this from their store and Amazon didn't offer the produce for some time. Then it was back, and there were two positive reviews. SO I finally placed my order. I was ordering for my kennel club as a donation to the local library. The book arrived securely packaged but the front cover was already tearing away from the book - I saw this the minute I opened the cover and didn't even look at the rest of the book.I'm sure this is an excellent reference, but it really needs to fixed or it's useless, and it's definitely NOT an inexpensive book. I just checked AKC and they no longer have this book for sale in their store. I have written to find out what is going on.

Amazon: I love the revised AKC book, what little bit I have reviewed However, upon opening my 'new' copy, the inside binding is broken/top to bottom in the front (only)?, so returned it to it's original wrapping until I heard from you. I heard rumor that there had been a release problem. Am I getting this at a reduced price because of this? Excellent! Vast improvement over the last one. Has the usual information for breeders and judges plus multiple, usually good, pictures of each breed. Also new information about what to expect from each breed, geared to people looking to add a purebred dog to their household. Missing the information on dog care, etc. that was in the previous book - but there are plenty of books about that - and this book is heavy enough!
