amazing quality
Still learning watercolour, love the practice, really helpful when you get blocked and just want to paint. I have other books like this. BUT what makes this one stand above the others is the quality of the paper, classy , professional way everything is put together....I truly hope to see more books like this !

Beautiful l book
Very nice book, beautiful illustrations. The drawings are on ‘art paper’. It’s very smooth. Feels like mixed media paper to me. The marks on the paper are very faint, might be hard to see at times. Others have mentioned this isn’t a good book for beginners. I do agree- the drawings are not simple. There is a lot of detail. But I consider myself a beginner and I will do the best I can. It’s not an overly expensive book, so I’ll consider it a learning experience.

Definitely not for beginners
This is a beautiful book. The paper quality seems very good for a hot pressed paper. I had been looking for something like this to use out of my studio to just relax with. I love it. That being said, I think someone with no experience with watercolor could become very discouraged while trying to use this book. It's not easy, especially if you're wanting to achieve the results shown in the example paintings.

general, but great instruction, hot pressed paper
I am a beginner at painting in general and just started watercolor 3 months ago. The biggest obstacle to successful project outcomes in this book is the paper, which is hot-pressed (very smooth surface) and thus difficult to learn on. There's not a lot of room to make mistakes that aren't glaring. The instructions are in general terms but adequate and are found on pages 6-15, and the information on how to paint various birds' specific feathers was fab. As for painting each bird: you are given the paint colors but no paint company as reference which is a bit unhelpful as colors and their relative ingredients vary from supplier to supplier. The reference image (the artist painted bird) is beautiful, but also difficult to discern color variation at times and where 2 images of the same bird are provided, they vary in tone due to printing issues (one is printed on cover paper which looks like a cold-pressed paper, and the other on the hot-pressed paper and looks washed out).

Lovely illustrations/tutorials, paper quality on coloring pages not great
Beautiful illustrations and tutorials, the fact that there are references will help beginners but the paper is very challenging. Got this after reading many reviews and wanted a low stress way to practice painting birds, so it was as expected.Confirming the issue with this book is the paper on pages meant for practicing watercolor. It’s nice heavyweight paper but you cannot do washes much less layers of color. The moment you add water to soften an edge on a wash the color underneath lifts too easily, but also cannot “lift” color the way you can with traditional watercolor paper. That makes it much harder for beginners who might not have as much control or practice. (Have several pepin watercoloring books that paper is much more suitable for watercolor practice.)If you are buying this for the instructional part and don’t mind the coloring pages being like practice it’s worth it, but don’t give up on watercolor if you are starting and struggle with this book, just try different paper.

All of my art supplies, and adult coloring books, and paints, paint brushes, and watercolor books, ect. I give them all 5 star ratings.

Highly recommend!
The is a beautiful book! Instructions, examples, wonderful pull outs on quality paper with the outlines not too dark or too light. I hope she makes more of them just exquisite! A new watercolorist might want to experiment with brushes and colors first but this book will be appreciated by new or highly experienced artists. Also you could use watercolor pencils as well. Thank you Emma Faull!
