The Legend of the Cape May Diamond (Myths, Legends, Fairy and Folktales)

Cape May diamonds are crystal clear quartz pebbles or stones that may be found along the New Jersey shore. They can come from any shore, but Cape May is the most famous place to find them. This story presents a legend as to how and why the pebbles came to land on Cape May sand. It's quite a story and is well supported by terrific watercolor illustrations on each spread. I read this aloud to my third grade students before going on a field trip to the beach and I give them one diamond from my collection as a souvenir. They certainly gain a new perspective into what to look for when beachcombing - and it's great to see them using their powers od discovery while finding other treasures along the way - as long as they aren't plastic.

Her collections of NJ legends like this one are wonderful ... and the illustrations are superb.As one of my daughter's and my favorite places to visit is Cape May, NJ ... and we do look for "Cape May diamonds" if we venture onto the beach, this was a great way to connect her further to the folk narratives of our home state.

This book is a wonderful Native American tale. If you’re teaching about Native history, NJ history, or just enjoy NJ history or the Jersey Shore, it’s a great read.

I love Cape May. I love everything about Cape May. My daughter is now 10 but still loves when I read her the book. When she was younger, I'd gather her and some of the kids she'd met on the beach and read the story then "just happen" to find some Cape May Diamonds by my feet. They LOVED it!!

Very interesting take on a beautiful place!

I was born and raised in SJ near the Delaware River, growing up we always went to the Jesey Shore but never to Cape May.As an adult a friend took me to Cape May & introduced me to Cape May Diamonds. About 5 years ago I moved to Florida and now I came home to NJ for vacation. Recently my sister & I took her daughter(3) & my granddaughter(6) to Cape May. While there we hunted Cape May Diamonds. I bought this book to commemorate our day at the shore. The book is a find and a should be put on your keeper shelf - beautifully written story & marvelous illastrations. I intend to give it as a gift to my adult friends who like me love Cape may & Cape May Diamonds.
