Q: the meter says its mechanical but the review say otherwise is this a good meter?

It's a mechanically operated meter via a small fan blade like device inside with digital display. So far I have no complaints with mine. Works well.

Q: At $72 disposable seems a bit steep. Regardless of warranty - Is it possible to replace the battery?

According to the owner's manual and Fill-Rite customer service, this meter was designed to be disposable. The battery should last 3-5 years depending use and such.

Q: what size hose I need for flow meter?

As I recall from when I installed this item, it's inlet and outlet are 1". Most nozzles that I've seen are 3/4" which means that you are going to have to bush this and use a close nipple. If you have to reduce the diameter with bushings, then you may as well stick with a hose with 3/4" fittings. I think that is how I set mine up and I've been very happy with this setup.
