I'm assuming you take off the top and turn the grinder upside down to grind the salt and pepper?

Thanks for submitting your question , yes in order to grind you need to turn the grinder upside down but you can either do it with the lid closed and then open the lid carefully and apply the spice to your food or remove the lid and grind directly over your food .The first method is useful when applying the spice over steaming dishes so that the steams will not be absorbed and clog your grinders mechanism.
