How does the ADF perform when scanning printed photographs like 4" x 5" or 4" x 6"?

The ADF performs well with 4x5 or 4x6 photos. Start off doing 2 or 3 photos at a time to see how well your particular scanner performs. If good, you can then do stacks of 5 or 6 at a time. This advice comes from real-world experience NOT the manual.

will this scan 3x5 index cards and if so how many can you load at once

Hello it should, however, a lot depends on paper thickness and other features. Best would be simply placing each card on a scanner glass. Best regards.
