Q: Is the stock filter a 1 micron or what comes with the vac? I see a hepa filter is $109--ouch.

It's my understanding that the stock filter is rated at 1 micron. Hopefully you won't need the HEPA often. I keep mine on the shelf most of the time.

Q: Does this work on Sheetrocking dust from sanding?

It probably will, but if you are a professional drywaller, it will not be big enough. Another problem would be the cost of filter bags. Amazon sells (5) bags for $31.12. They are not reusable. You might try to use a cyclone separator to reduce the amount of dust that makes it to the filter bag. I posted a photo with a Dust Deputy cyclone separator and PVC piping. There are also a couple other photos showing cyclone setups.
