how wide do the clamps open? Wondering if i can fit them around a (generic light weight) lighting stand.

You did not say the diameter of your stand! The clamps open beyond 3cm, maybe 5cm although I don't have it in front of me, but the same manufacturer makes a clamp ended version of this for lighting stands, so that might be better. The clamps / gooseneck are not great with any weight, light stuff is fine, but you'd need to test with your setup and the angles / weight loading.
