Lightweight and user friendly
I wanted an easily portable laptop that still had the features of a bigger, more expensive model. It hasn't disappointed. Lovely, high definition screen, very fast, and lightweight. Love it!

WiFi issues (resolved) but a good performer
The Dell 5491 isn't the most lightweight convertible I have used but at a price of under £500, I did not expect it to be made of expensive weight-saving material. What it does lack in the weight department, it makes up for in other areas. The Intel Core i3-10110U CPU that powers this device is a 10th generation CPU (formerly known as Comet Lake.) Compred to its predecessor, the Comet Lake CPUs enables faster DDR4 2666 RAM support and higher turbo frequencies. In general usage, Windows 10 Task Manager showed low CPU usage, highlighting the efficiency of Intel's newest offering. For a budget device, the screen is of a high standard. Backlighting appeared even, contrast ratio is good and watching video is a pleasure due to vibrant colours from the inbuilt IPS screen that offers a maximum of 1920 x 1080 resolution. Another bonus is that the display was compatible with my passive fibre tipped stylus, which failed to operate on a similar Teclast F5 device. The battery life is quite reasonable and 6 hours of usage from a small 42 Wh 3-cell battery is very acceptable. The conditions for this test was using a screen at 80% brightness and almost a full day of using the device for software development using Visual Studio, while having Outlook and Chrome web browsers opened. Dell do provide Battery Power Manager software but all this is doing is to create new profiles for Windows Power Saving and enabling or disabling various options for each profile. I would rather go to Windows Power Saving and alter the settings myself. Needless to say, this was soon uninstalled. Furthermore, some of the settings in Windows Power Saving were disabled and a registry setting was required to allow Windows to reveal the missing settings (such as wifi power saving, USB selective suspend, etc.)One feature that attracted me to this laptop is the employment of power delivery within the USB C port. Personally, this is an important feature as it enabled me to utilise power delivery from an existing docking station and eschewing the need for the supplied power adapter. One cable powers both the docking station and the laptop - very convenient indeed. The wifi adapter that is fitted in this machine is an Intel 9560 adapter that takes advantage of the Comet Lake's CNVio support. The architecture allows for certain expensive parts of traditional WiFi adapters to be moved to the processor while the cheaper components are retained. The upshot being to simplify design and keep costs down. Performance-wise, the Intel 9560 is capable of 1.73 Gbps link speed but due to my router being unable to support the 160 Mhz channel bandwidth required for this link speed, I was only able to achieve a link speed of 866 Mbps. While we're still on the subject of WiFi, I experienced a lot of issues with the WiFi adapter on the device powering down and even a reboot of the machine would not always kick it back into life. I was confident the WiFi adapter was not faulty and this is very symptomatic of over-zealous power management issues. I remembered several years ago on another machine, I had experienced difficulties with the notorious Intel 7260 WiFi adapter that would power itself down and it would have been very difficult to restart it. The issues with the Intel 9560 in this laptop seemed very similar and left me with the feeling of dejection and disappointment. But, I was left wondering that surely Intel could not make the same mistake again and upon investigation, I did not see the ubiquity of complaints with the Intel 9560 as had been the case with the 7260 and this led me to believe the issue is a software problem. I knew Dell would install all sorts of useless apps and one of them is the previously mentioned Dell Power Manager and as I knew it's a useless piece of software, I had nothing to lose by removing it. Immediately, my WiFi issues were solved. Consequently I recommend all users to UNINSTALL DELL POWER MANAGER!To conclude, I was pleased with this device. Once I figured out the WiFi issues and uninstalled every single Dell branded app from this machine, I was pleased with the overall operation. My main usage is for video playback (including 4K which is hardware-decoded) and software development. The i3 CPU is more than enough to handle these tasks. I was most pleased that Dell have incorporated USB-C power delivery support and was also pleased that a passive stylus was perfectably usable on the touchscreen. There is very little to fault with this machine and if I was pushed hard to find a fault, I would say that the weight is rather on the heavy side but at under £500, we are not paying for lightweight space-age materials.
