You might not get it in time for your son's birthday. I'd recommend contacting Amazon. If they don't deliver him to you by a specific date, you might be able to get a refund.

Mine came in an extra box. Inspected it and the original packaging came to me with no damage.

Mine didn't take 5 months. Maybe it depends on where you live? For me it took a couple weeks and when I asked, they said it had something to do with the facility he was being shipped from
