Q: Are these only for use with the dedicated ($500?) printer?

They are meant to be used with the proprietary printer, but I just pull them out of the cartridge and write on them with a Sharpie - works well, though it is a strange "dispenser" and not how it is intended to be used.

Q: The description says both "White print-on area" and "colored print-on area", which is it? And what does "self-laminating" mean?

I'm guessing this is a general description for this type of label - this particular one is WHITE. When you wrap it around the cable it covers the print therefore laminating the print so it does not smear or come off. Hope that helps!
