Q: I’m not familiar with this material, was looking fir glass. Is this ok to sit outside to make sun tea?

Yes, I make sun tea all the time and is lighter than glass and will not break if dropped but it is tall and occupies space inside the fridge.

Q: if you don't infuse fruit, what is the advantage of this pitcher as opposed to using boiling water and tea bags in a plastic pitcher?

It provides you the option of using loose tea, as well as bags. And for whatever reason, the tea I cold brew seems to taste better than using the same tea and brewing it with hot water. I've tried several different types of Green tea using this pitcher to cold brew, as well as using the same tea prepared in a traditional manner. The cold brew method yields better tasting tea (to me anyways) almost every time. I have tea cold brewing in this pitcher in the fridge basically 24/7/365. Other than the unwieldy size if this pitcher , it is flat out awesome.

Q: Can you make sun tea in this pitcher? I see the plastic is free of several chemicals to avoid, but wondering if putting it in the sunshine is bad?

Geeky Panda reviewer has NO idea what they are talking about. Refer to mfgr spec...it IS safe to use for sun tea & hot brewed tea. Besides, sun tea temp is NO DIFFERENT THAN AMBIENT TEMP. Enjoy your sun tea in this pitcher.

Q: How many tea bags do you add?

This pitcher is for loose leaf teas. If you wanted to use tea bags instead you don't need the insert. As far as how many tea bags to add, I suppose it depends on how you like your tea. I typically use 10-11 tea bags for iced tea.
