Q: should the steam lever stay set on the right, mine will not it just reverts back to middle and left position?

My FV5872 iron does the same (lever does not stay in the “Extra Steam” position). The instructions imply that this is a “Press and Hold” function but it is very difficult to do this when ironing, it reverts to “Stop” as soon as you stop holding it and it doesn’t seem to produce much extra steam anyway. If you want extra steam, the Turbo-boost function works well.

Q: Is this iron suitable for linen?

I’ve had this iron quite a few months now and I’ve ironed almost all fabrics with it, Including linen with no problems. It has 3 heat setting for cotton, wool and delicates all come with variable steam or can be used without steam

The cord length of the FV5872 steam iron is 3 metres.

Q: Does this require replacement filters / cartridges etc, and if so, how often? Are they readily available?

No it doesn’t have filters or cartridges. Just fill with tap or bottled water. There is an anti calc lever, you pull this out and rinse away the lime scale on it. Also you can use an iron descaler.
