Q: If clamped down tight to a pole and not bolted onto something, would the clamp part be likely to twist around te pole?

I use them to hold a couple of umbrellas up on my porch and the awesome!!! When clamped they hold fast and nothing twists, hope this helps.

For something fairly light (not a heavy string mop,) I'd imagine a vertical hold wouldn't be a problem. I use mine to hold my staff and a couple of canes in my motorhome.

Can be mounted vertically or horizontally. It depends on the application. If you need to hold say a broom handle, mount it vertically, if you need to hold a run of hose horizontal to the ground, mount it horizontally.
