Q: What is the current draw on this device, at say 12V max volume both channels?

The operating current changes as the music is played, and the volume has a big impact. The maximum is about 100mA

Q: Sound files on this chip are triggered by connecting gnd to one of the #d holes. is it safe to leave this wire connected permanently for loop play?

The spec sheet doesn't say whether it is safe to do this or not. I would monitor the setup for a while to ensure there are no overheating problems.

Q: Can this device be set in continuous playback mode. And how simply do you do that?

Yes. Set the device into IO Independent mode 0 or 1 using the red DIP switches. Load your mp3 or wav file onto a TF ( micro SD ) card and name it 1.mp3 or 1.wav. Insert the TF card, power up the device, and connect IO pin 0 to ground. File 1.mp3 or 1.wav will play until IO Pin 0 is removed from ground. If you set the device to Independent Mode 0, the device will continue playing the current song to the end of the file after releasing IO Pin 0 from ground. If you set the device to Independent Mode 1, it will stop playing immediately after the releasing IO Pin 0 from ground. Hold IO Pin 0 to ground for continuous playback of song "1". Google for the DY-HV20T manual for technical details. Good luck!

Q: How so I wire a switch?

If you look on the amazon listing. It shows 8 switch connection points that you can individually connect to the ground connection to play 8 different sounds. They need to be saved and downloaded with the 8 proper names in order to work. Just a tip, to get good sound out you need to connect to computer speakers.
