what the size of the package for the 40 mats and the weight ? I need to carry it and put them in a car without unwrapping.

Mine came in one large box. They should fit in a car if you put the seats flat. I've a Mazda 3 . They are not that heavy .

Can you see the grid through the gravel once it's been laid? I want to use cream coloured gravel, will the black plastic of the grid be visible or not

Unit depends how deep you make the gravel. Lay it thick enough will be ok. But where vehicle goes over it there will be compaction and movement of the gravel and then grid will show. As long as you take it level it should be ok.

Can I put a Large garden log cabin on this and does it need filling with gravel to add strength?

The paperwork I downloaded from the internet said you could infill with gravel or earth and grass seed it and it would be strong enough to erect a shed or park a car on it. I have a 10 x 12 foot area filled with gravel, with large planted pots and seat on it. More than adequate for walking on.

I want to use them for a gravel driveway would I need to put a hardcore base down first or can I lay them on top of soil ?

You must realise that there is a certain amount of flexibility when the squares are interlocked, the amount of deviation from a level surface will depend on the softness of the existing ground and the weight applied. I would recommend a light base course, which can be compacted before laying down the squares, which can then be backfilled with graded gravel. Usage will further compact the driveway, taking a different line during the initial usage.
