Still working perfectly after more than five years. The reason I suspect that some of these have failed is because they've not been lubricated regularly. You see that little hole with the word 'oil' next to it? A drop of three in one every year or so, and this thing will last forever.

There is a little plastic bar, should this be removed?

Yes, it's a safety against careless handling when unwrapping. For a canopener the blade is seriously sharp.
